The classic Garaudet Meursault Label
Every Sunday at 7:30 am I'm going deep
into my wine cellar to pull out the last of
some very great bottles. I promise rare wines
for the cellar- builder in very limited
quantities, gems of astonishing quality
carrying highly pedigreed labels that will
tempt the most temperate among us.
So, don't hit the snooze! These wines will be
gone, gone, gone, quickly.
Quick note: All of these wines have been in my temperature controlled warehouse sense their release. This is important and very rare for these older wines
Paul Garaudet's Meursault vielle vignes 2006 White Burgundy from 80 year old vines My Last 5 cases at Close-out Pricing
"In early June 2007, I visited the region and
tasted more than 250 red and white Burgundies
from barrel...It was clearly an outstanding
vintage for the region's white wines. I
give the 2006 white Burgundy vintage a
preliminary rating of 90-93 on Wine
Spectator's 100 point scale. The best
whites are full of ripe fruit, with
freshness, structure and plenty of mineral
character. They have the flesh that makes
them immediately appealing." -Bruce Sanderson
Wine Spectator
Robert Parker agrees and rates the 2006
vintage a 90!
There is great discussion about the differences
between 2005 and 2006 (both very fine years).
This I
can say - the wines to drink now are the soft,
precocious, often exotic 2006s while the
higher alcohol,
tighter 2005 mature. 2006s are delicious
right now.
It is the Holiday season and the time for the best of White Burgundy. I
can't expect a Meursault to come to the table
every night, but but special meals are made special by special wines - and Meursault always fill that role ?
We all know Meursault. It's a 100% Chardonnay
from Burgundy. The wine comes from a
funny-shaped, sleepy old stone village with
the same name in the Cote de Beaune which is
the southern part of the Cote d'Or. Meursault
are rare and fabulously stylish with citrus
and honey and apricot flavors and very dry mineral finishes
This Meursault is a wine with great length
and viscosity and minerality. I had one the
other night and the color was like the amber
of a cat's eye. It sheeted down the sides of
my glass like honey. Stunning. There is a lot
of material in this wine. You might run into
some coffee, lemons, pears, hazelnuts.
Remember, this is French Chardonnay, the
purest expression of the grape. The flavors
don't bump and grind through your senses,
they waft, they penetrate stealthily. You
will not be reminded of a heavy oak log.
These flavors sneak up on you and suddenly
you're gotten. No other white wines in the
world have the subtlety of French white
Burgundies. And, isn't that what we all
admire in this world: understatement.
Paul Garaudet says his Meursault should
drink well right away, but last for several
more years. It won't last that long in my
house. I know that.

Meursault. Even typing it gives me the
tingles. Cynthia Hurley
