I went ga-ga over Erell Ninot's Rully
le Gresigny when I tasted with her
last fall.
Allen Meadows of Burghound got there a bit
after
me (thankfully, or there would not be any left). He is
also an
Errel Ninot fan. Meadows immediately recognized
the
irresistible rapport between value and
quality at this Domaine.
Here are his notes:
"2008 Rully "Grésigny": Here too the nose is
still recovering from the recently concluded
malos though the richer and fuller- bodied
flavors also possess a bit more underlying
depth, particularly on the sappy and
lingering finish. (Rated 87-90)/2011+"
When Bob and I took off to live and
ski in a small French village for a month
shortly after our visit to Erell's cellars, guess what
wine we had
delivered to the mountain?
Yes, Errel's Rully 1er Cru le Gresigny.
There were a lot of wines we could have
chosen and by the way, we didn't order enough
of it. Each year we choose a wine that we think is
drinking
beautifully right now to stock it for our stay - believe me
there is nothing of much interest available locally.
The le Gresigny was still in the barrel when
we tasted it last October and I've had to
wait a long time for it to arrive, but now the container
has
docked and I'm eager to put some in my glass.
I recently re-read my tasting notes from that
day:
"Elegant, good acidity, perfect balance.
Full-flavored." I like it a lot!
This is an amazing white Burgundy with full
expression of the Chardonnay grape for a
brilliant price. There are only about 575
cases made. With your eyes closed, you may
think you're on la route du vin somewhere
north around Meursault.
I came away from my tasting with Errel with
two words on my lips: fruit and flavor. Her
wines are soaked with wonderful flavors and
intense fruit notes of lemons, grapefruits,
melons. That's what I like in my French
white Burgundies: pure fruit with assertive
flavors - not driven by oak, but by the
fruit.
Errel does all the right things when she
makes her wines: 100% de-stemming, natural
yeasts, thoughtful use of wood, and low
yields.
Get behind this fast; we don't have much left.
