The Clos Triguedina Bottles - One of Cahors most respected estates
Every Sunday at 7:30 a.m. I'm going deep
into my wine cellar to pull
out the last of some very great bottles. I
promise rare wines for the cellar- builder in
very limited quantities, gems of astonishing
quality carrying highly pedigreed labels that
will tempt the most temperate among us.

Wines

Cahors is one of the boldest, richest, and
inkiest wines you'll ever put in your
mouth. And, the French Malbec is not brutally
high in alcohol like some Malbecs coming out
of Argentina.
Have you ever felt like you've
been hit on the head by a club after a round
of New World Malbec? I have and I don't like
it.
Etienne Baldès planted Clos Triguedina in
1830. Today, Jean-Luc is the eighth
generation to be in charge of the winery.
Clos Triguedina is the most "mover and
shaker" estate in the Cahors.
"It is impossible to separate Clos Triguedina
from the name Cahors. Jean-Luc Baldes is a
passionate grower possessed by true know-how
and the determination to produce wines of
great distinction...Clos Triguedina 2005 is
of beautiful composition, still held in
reserve by its youth. It will be delicious to
drink over the next five years." -La
Revue du Vin de France 2008
Here's what Wine Spectator says about
Clos
Triguedina, the Domaine's wine by the same
name:
"A strapping, robust Malbec, with chewy
flavors of dark plum and bittersweet
chocolate. Finishes with iron and spice, with
plenty of tannins. Best from 2009 through
2012. 300 cases imported. -KM"
Clos Triguedina is a blend of 80%
Malbec (known locally and historically as
Auxerrois), 15% Merlot, 5% Tannat which is a
relative of Malbec. This wine comes from a
prized plot in the appellation. The soil is
clay-limestone. There is severe selection to
eliminate inferior grapes. The wine is raised
in one-third new oak with the rest aged in
un an et deux ans futs. There is
de-leafing and green harvest performed in the
vineyards.
Clos Triguedina also makes a limited production cuvee called
Probus. For those of you who like a bit
of history with your wine, Emperor Probus was
a hero to Cahors because he repealed the
Papal 200-year-old law that forbade any
winemaking that was non-Italian. Not that the
winemakers ever paid much attention to the
law, but Probus freed them up to get their
wines out into the open.
Probus is elegant, powerful, racy, silky,
harmonious, first class - very, very,
beautiful wine. It is 100% Malbec and aged in
100% new oak. It's one of those wines that
will stop conversation around your table when
you serve it. "What is THIS?" and then before
you know it, you will be opening another
bottle of wine. Probus is splendid and first
class, and very low production. Cynthia Hurley
