3 bottles of Chateau Seguin Pessac Leogan - from the most successful area in 2009
Parker, Tanzer, La Revue du Vin de
France, Wine Spectator - they all agree: "There is no question that 2009 is going to be
one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages of our
lifetimes."
Robert Parker on the 2009
Bordeaux, "Some of the greatest wines I have
tasted in 32 years"
10 cases available.
All the wine press and wine critics has praised the 2009 vintage and called it historic for its quality and exceptional ripeness. The true star of the vintage are the cabernet based wines because the Cabernet Sauvignon were so powerful and concentrated. This has lead to a vintage that has been described as opulant, voluptuous with excessive fatness and succulence.
The Left Bank (Medoc and Graves) is the area were some of the best wines were made because that is were Cabernet is the principle grape in the blend. On the Right Bank (St Emilion and Pomerol) Merlot tends to dominate the wines.
On the Left Bank everyone seems to feel that Graves was excetionally successful and maybe the most consistent source of great wines. The Graves - now called Pessac Leogan which is the northern portion where Haut Brion (100), La Mission Haut Brion (100) Smith Haut Lafite (96), Domaine Chevelier (96) Haut Bailly (98) and the other top chateau are concenetrated) had exceptional succes and is the place to look for and great values in the 2nd tier estates. The ones list above are all in the $2000+ a case category and sold out early. Chateau Sequin is in the same tightly packed Pessac Leogan growing area and was a big success in 2009 making according to Parker their "best wine ever." Below are Niel Martin's notes from rparker.com.
Note: Robert Parker uses "Sleeper of the Vintage" to identify wines that perform way above their expectations and represent exceptional values.
CHATEAU SEGUIN, PESSAC LEOGNAN 2009 Parker Rated 91-93* 6 bottles $185, $359 ($29.99) per 12 bottle wood case. " The best wine ever produced at this estate, the 2009, a 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot blend bursts with kirsch, black currants, camphor, and tobacco aromas and flavors. Very opulent, this seductive, lush, concentrated wine is a classic as well as a great sleeper of the vintage. Drink it over the next 12-15 years. (Tasted once.)" Robert Parker
Here are the notes from the highly respected British wine writer Jancis Robinson MW: Rated 16.5/20 Points
Ch Seguin: "Life and vivacity and succulence here. This speaks to me - quite an achievement since it's the penultimate wine tasted in a very long morning. Well done! Great succulence and freshness but no austerity."
Here is more of what the press says about 2009:
"...virtually
everyone agreed that '09 will go down in
history as the greatest Bordeaux vintage of
all time." Whoa! -Stephen
Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
"The reasons for such high
praise? A
seemingly endless line-up of remarkably
concentrated yet balanced wines, and the
possibility that more properties than ever
before have made what may end up being their
best wine of all time. There are also rich
pickings in the value-for-money appellations
of Castillon, Francs and Fronsac." -Stephen
Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
"A
lot of people make comparisons to 1982, which
I have to agree with to some extent but,
honestly, I think they are better." James
Suckling Wine Spectator
There you have it. Consensus on the quality
of the 2009s.
Two Reasons to Buy Bordeaux
Futures (in
Great
Vintages) First it
assures you
access to
the best wines
before they are sold out. The top rated wines
often sell
out in Bordeaux within a day and often in hours.
Second, while you do pay in advance you will
get a substantial discount to their price
once they
reach the US (if they are available at all)
In 2005 this discount was from 30 to 100%.
