Chateau Grand Mayne Bottle
Parker, Tanzer, La Revue du Vin de
France, Wine Spectator - they all agree: "There is no question that 2009 is going to be
one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages of our
lifetimes."
Robert Parker on the 2009
Bordeaux, "Some of the greatest wines I have
tasted in 32 years"
Grand Mayne is one of St Emilions greatest properties. It lies on the southern end of the important limestone plateau. Many experts consider this one of the most privileged sites in St Emilion. It is one of the oldest properties (dating from the 1760s) long known for its opulent, full flavored quality. 3/4 new oak is well integrated but certainly adds to this highly regarded wine. It is known for being unusually drinkable while young for such a highly quality and complex wine. This is definitely true for 2009 because the complex tannins are so soft and round. Parker is very enthusiastic about Grand Mayne. He calls it "one of the most opulent and richest wines of St Emilion. It was a striking success in 2009 and for the quality an exceptionally good value. I have only 6 cases available.
CHATEAU GRAND MAYNE St Emilion GCC 2009 Parker Rated 91-94 6 bottles $325, $599 ($49.99) per 12 bottle wood case. " I enjoy this wine in nearly every vintage (the 1998 was one of my all-time favorites), and while the 2009 may not be better than the 1998, it is an impressive effort. Moreover, it represents a great value in top-notch Bordeaux. Its opaque purple color is followed by plenty of blueberry, boysenberry, and raspberry fruit notes intermixed with subtle hints of graphite and oak. The wine possesses ripe tannin, full-bodied power, admirable purity, and impressive amounts of glycerin and sweetness from its high ripeness (but not over-ripeness) in the finish. Consume it over the next 15+ years. (Tasted three times.)" Robert Parker
Here is more of what the press says about 2009:
"...virtually
everyone agreed that '09 will go down in
history as the greatest Bordeaux vintage of
all time." Whoa! -Stephen
Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
"The reasons for such high
praise? A
seemingly endless line-up of remarkably
concentrated yet balanced wines, and the
possibility that more properties than ever
before have made what may end up being their
best wine of all time. There are also rich
pickings in the value-for-money appellations
of Castillon, Francs and Fronsac." -Stephen
Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
"A
lot of people make comparisons to 1982, which
I have to agree with to some extent but,
honestly, I think they are better." James
Suckling Wine Spectator
There you have it. Consensus on the quality
of the 2009s.
Two Reasons to Buy Bordeaux
Futures (in
Great
Vintages) First it
assures you
access to
the best wines
before they are sold out. The top rated wines
often sell
out in Bordeaux within a day and often in hours.
Second, while you do pay in advance you will
get a substantial discount to their price
once they
reach the US (if they are available at all)
In 2005 this discount was from 30 to 100%.
