Kentucky Woodlands E-News is published by the University of Kentucky Forestry Extension group. This periodic E-News will share up-to-date information about programs and other items of interest to woodland owners, the wood industry, and those that want to learn more about the amazing woodland resource in Kentucky.

Emerald Ash Borer Quarantine Update As of June 2012, the Emerald Ash Borer quarantine has been expanded to the following 27 Kentucky counties: Anderson, Boone, Boyd, Boyle, Bourbon, Bracken, Campbell, Carroll, Fayette, Franklin, Gallatin, Garrard, Grant, Greenup, Hardin, Harrison, Henry, Jefferson, Jessamine, Kenton, Oldham, Owen, Pendleton, Scott, Shelby, Trimble, and Woodford. These counties are included in the regulated area because they are either infested with the emerald ash borer, or are in close proximity to an infestation site and they are found within a portion of Kentucky with a high density of ash trees. Profitable Farms and Woodlands: A Practical Guide to Agroforestry for Landowners, Farmers and Ranchers
A much needed practical guide in Agroforestry has been developed by a team of agroforestry specialists from the 1890 and 1862 Land Grant Universities and the USDA National Agroforestry Center (NAC). Retired UK Forestry Extension professor, Deborah Hill Ph.D. was one of the lead authors of the guide. The guide depicts step-by-step methods and principles on developing agroforestry practices for farmers and woodland owners for the purpose of enhancing the economic and environmental benefits of their farms and woodlands. UK Forestry Extension and the Kentucky Division of Forestry have partnered up to sponsor the Kentucky Woodlands Storm Damage website (www.kytimberdamage.net). This resource provides information for woodland owners that effected by storm damage. Resources include: a photo guide for assessing storm damage, publications, a webinar, and links to get help with your storm damaged woodlands.

Pete McNeill Forestry Leadership Endowed Scholarship
Representatives from several Kentucky forestry organizations have met with the family of Pete McNeill, noted forestry ambassador and leader, and this group is working to establish an endowment fund that will support the advancement of forestry education by funding students at the University of Kentucky's Forestry Department in the College of Agriculture. Managing Your Land:
Natural Resources Opportunities for Landowners
October 11 - November 8, 2012
This course will provide landowners with an awareness of options for managing their lands for a variety of natural resources. This course is intended to be a pre-cursor to the Master Wildlifer, Master Tree Farmer, Master Naturalist, and the Natural Resources Enterprises program workshops planned in the future. This program will be delivered via the internet to any computer with an internet connection. A high-speed connection is best for viewing the program since it will include streaming video. The program will originate from Clemson University and can be viewed without special software. For more information click here.

Forest Inventory Data ReleasedAccording to a Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) Factsheet recently released by the USDA Forest Service Souther  n Research Station, forest land in Kentucky covers an estimated 12.4 million acres. The report - a compilation of data collected by the Kentucky Division of Forestry's FIA program. Leah MacSwords, director of the Kentucky Division of Forestry noted that Kentucky's forests are producing two times more wood volume than is being removed. While wood-using industries have been affected by the slowing economy, Kentucky's forests continue to "stand ready" for economic development opportunities in rural areas of the state. Jeff Stringer wins Southern Group of State Foresters Hardtner Award
In May, the Southern Group of State Foresters awarded Jeffrey Stringer, Ph.D., UK Forestry Professor and editor of Kentucky Woodlands Magazine, the 2012 Henry Hardtner Award. The purpose of the Henry Hardtner Award is to recognize efforts that directly contribute to increased forest stewardship and sustainable forest management on nonindustrial private forest lands and/or the delivery of a positive and influential forest management message to landowners, public and natural resource professionals.

Kevin Galloway wins KWOA Service Forester Award
In recognition of outstanding professional services, Kevin Galloway, Service Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry, Northeastern Kentucky District, was presented the Kentucky Woodland Owners Association's Outstanding Service Forester Award during the KWOA annual meeting at Pennyrile Forest Resort State Park on April 10, 2012. Bob Gossett, Fleming County woodland owner and KWOA board member, nominated Kevin and him the award. Kevin has worked in northeastern Kentucky since 1992 helping countless woodland owners get the most out of their woodlands.

Land-Grant Law Turns 150:
Students Crowd Into Agriculture Colleges An interesting article was recently released in the Chronicle of Higher Education regarding the 150th anniversary of the Land-Grant Law which established Land-Grant universities including the University of Kentucky. The article points out that more and more students are pursuing agricultural related fields (including forestry) while at the same time state budget support is shrinking (subscription required for full article click here.).
