Calculating the Carbon footprint of Wood Buildings
Wood products store carbon absorbed by trees during their growing cycle, keeping it out of the atmosphere. The use of wo od construction also offsets greenhouse gases that may otherwise have been emitted during manufacturing of fossil fuel-intensive materials. FPS is pleased to partner with WoodWorks to provide an online tool to calculate the carbon footprint of wood buildings. Check out the new Carbon Calculator and learn about the benefits of wood.

Gibson to Pay $350,000 in Penalties Over Illegal Wood
"Gibson Guitar Corp. entered into a criminal enforcement agreement with the United States today resolving a criminal investigation into allegations that the company violated the Lacey Act by illegally purchasing and importing ebony wood from Madagascar and rosewood and ebony from India...The criminal enforcement agreement defers prosecution for criminal violations of the Lacey Act and requires Gibson to pay a penalty amount of $300,000." June 2012 Housing Commentary
New home and existing sales still are bottom bouncing - even with near record low interest rates. A continuing positive is that we have the least quantity of available new and existing homes since 2005. As reported by Delton Alderman and Urs Buehlmann.
June housing data indicated an increase in overall single- and multi-family housing starts. New and existing home sales indicated sharp decreases; housing completions and residential construction spending indicated modest increases; and building permits decreased month over month. Read more...

Housing Trends and the Impact on Wood Manufacturing
While there are some signs of improvement in the business conditions and sales volume faced by the secondary wood industry in relation to the housing market, they are slow in coming. This third annual housing market survey looks at the trends in the industry and analyzes what has changed in terms of market conditions, company performance and the actions being taken by woodworkers to remain profitable. The studies are a joint effort by Virginia Tech, the USDA Forest Service, and Wood & Wood Products. Read more...
