Forestry Economic Impact in Kentucky
Anyone that has been around the state of Kentucky can readily see that trees and woodlands are a large part of the landscape (more so in some parts of the state) but few could tell you how much of an economic impact all those trees have on the state's economy. Efforts are currently underway by a team of extension and research personnel from the University of Kentucky's Departments of Forestry and Agriculture Economics in the College of Agriculture to gain a better understanding of the full economic impact that forestry has in Kentucky. A report is being prepared for the Kentucky Agricultural Economic Outlook for 2013 that is distributed at Kentucky Farm Bureau's Annual Meeting in December.

Summer Firewood Tips
While a warming fire is not likely on your current wish list, it very well may be when winter rolls in. However, the months of July and August are probably too late to think about which trees to have cut down for the upcoming firewood season. Properly "seasoned" firewood is like a fine wine -- both improve with aging. Firewood needs to be cut, split and stacked for a minimum of six months to be properly dried for optimal performance. For more about firewood and which species are the best check out this article from Kentucky Woodlands Magazine.

forestry organizations met recently with the family of Pete McNeill, noted forestry ambassador and leader, who passed away last month. This group expressed interest in establishing an endowment to support the advancement of forestry education by funding students at the University of Kentucky's Forestry Department in the College of Agriculture. The group is working to finalize the details of this endowment, which will ultimately honor Pete, and at the request of the family, other leaders from the forestry community in perpetuity.
