Did you know that there are 33 snakes known to occur in Kentucky but only four of those are venomous? Dr. Tom Barnes, UK Forestry Extension professor has developed the Kentucky Snake Identification website www.kentuckysnakes.org

to make field identification of Kentucky snakes much easier.

Woodland Owners Short Course
Dates and Locations Set 

The 2012 Woodland Owners Short Course (WOSC) regional dates and locations have been set. Mark your calendars now and make plans to join us for the WOSC held in your region. The WOSC is a great opportunity for you and your family to learn how to enhance your woodland ownership experience and get your questions answered about your woodlands. Edmonson County Forestry and Wildlife Field Day May 17

May 17 flyerA forestry and wildlife Field Day will be held at the Perry and Margaret Sebaugh Tree Farm on May 17 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. The focus of the field day will be on: Tree Planting, Hunt Leasing, Invasive Species Control, Crop Tree Management, Wildlife and Woodlands, Karst Topography and Logging Best Management Practices. This field day is FREE and includes a meal, but pre-registration by May 14 is requested by calling 270.597.3628 or 859.257.7597. 

Kentucky Forest Leadership ProgramKy Forest Leadership Program

The Kentucky Forest Leadership Program will be held June 11-15 at Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center near Somerset. This week-long experience for high school students concentrates on forest management and related subjects such as civil engineering, entomology, soil science, wildlife habitat assessment, and water quality. Center for Forest and Wood Certification  

is now Open!

The Center for Forest and Wood Certification (CFWC) is now open to woodland owners, loggers, and forest products industries to participate in certification in a sustainable and affordable manner. The CFWC builds regional forest and wood certification capacity through the delivery of unbiased information; technical assistance; and the development of programs. Find out more by visiting

2012 is the Year of Kentucky's Forests

The Year of Kentucky's Forests is a year-long celebration to honor the Kentucky Division of Forestry's centennial as well as to encourage all citizens and communities to sustainably manage Kentucky's trees and forests. The "Got Cedar: Now what?" program is designed to assist landowners that have redcedar on their property and are not sure of what to do with it.
