How do I know I'm holding my adjustment?
by Patricia L. Gregg, DC PA
The only true way to know if you are holding your adjustment is to be checked by a NUCCA practioner. With that in mind, here are some helpful tips:
Your first question should be "What day am I on post-adjustment?" You can feel sore the very next day due to the three following things:
- A NUCCA correction changes the entire spine so your muscles, as well as bones, are in a new position. This may cause that "sore muscle" feeling as your body reacts to its new position.
- A NUCCA correction also turns on all your nerves. You have more sensory nerves than motor or action nerves, and they may now be giving your brain information that they were not able to before. This could mean you feel pain in areas that were pain-free prior to your adjustment, when your nervous system was more shut down.
- Your organs will start to function better and may dump dormant toxins into your system. This is why it's important to rest and drink plenty of water after an adjustment.
Your body goes through a "healing cycle/crisis" on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day after your adjustment. If you were adjusted on a Monday, you will have a healing cycle/crisis on Thursday, and on the following 4 Mondays.
On those days your nervous system will receive information from your body about what was wrong before you got adjusted. For example, say you visit our office with numbness and tingling in your arms and hands. You get adjusted on Monday, then on Tuesday you are sore. On Wednesday you actually feel pretty good. On Thursday, some of the tingling/numbness returns, only to disappear on Friday. Your brain is now getting clear information that you have numbness and tingling and is dealing with it.
These healing cycle/crisis days can vary in intensity, and last 12 to 24 hours. but any old symptom you had can pop up on these days. The longer your atlas stays stable, the more the body builds "cellular memory" for this new position and heals.
If you've held your adjustment for some time, pay attention to how you feel. Are you under a huge amount of stress? Have you been getting enough rest? How is your diet? Are you getting any exercise? These factors may affect the stabilization of the atlas.
If life is normal and you start feeling badly, see if you feel normal the next day. If you still feel out of sorts, and it gets worse 3 days in a row, it's best to come in and get checked.
You heal from above, down, inside, out. Healing is a process, not an event. In our high tech, fast paced world, we all want the magic bullet and to feel better immediately. Be patient, honor yourself and your body, and stay in a place of gratitude! |
This is a question that most of our patients have, yet very few ask. To put it plain and simple, wearing them helps the doctors at Back N Balance determine whether or not you are holding your adjustment.
The bowling shoes give us a consistent "leg check" to see if you are contracted on one side of your body or the other. The contraction shows up as what appears to be a short leg when you are lying on the table.
Being "out" puts pressure on the brainstem. Thanks to our friend gravity, this pressure causes the rest of the body to twist and buckle in order to support the weight of the head in its misaligned position.
The purpose of the NUCCA technique is having the head balanced on the atlas. In order to help it stay there, you have to have a good solid foundation given by the rest of the body.
When your head is balanced, you will have a nice, solid leg check. So, the long and short of it (pun intended) comes from holding your atlas adjustment. |
Testimonial
by Laura M.
I can't say enough for Dr. Shelley and the Back N Balance staff. I had seen traditional chiropractors since I was a teenager. It had always helped but I never stayed in alignment and my neck never felt "fixed".
I came to Dr. Shelley over a year ago, on a recommendation from a physical therapist. My initial adjustment was almost a zen experience. Dr. Shelley was very thorough with my health history/issues and the adjustment process was very relaxing. She was patient and focused. She actually measured me and showed me how and where I was misaligned. I left in perfect alignment and I felt more balanced than I ever had before.
Now our whole family sees Dr. Shelley. My sons (ages 11, 9 and 5) look forward to their adjustments and let me know when they feel they are "out". My oldest son says he feels more centered and that he can concentrate more easily after his adjustments.
The staff is always friendly, helpful and approachable. Thank you, Dr. Shelley and Back N Balance!

Our cells respond to human touch
A 2-year research study headed by Gloria A. Gronowicz of the Department of Surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, New Jersey, credits certain forms of alternative energy medicine with the successful stimulation and growth of normal human cell cultures.
Energy medicine includes such biofield therapies as Reiki, guikong and Therapeutic Touch (TT). The study focused on TT, which was credited with directly impacting how human cells respond to external stimulation.
In a case report published this year in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, findings suggest that external stimulation with TT may also be effective in decreasing abnormal cell growth is cancer patients.
In this particular study, three different cell cultures -- fibroblasts (derived from neonatal foreskin obtained during
circumcision
), tendon cells (derived from human hamstring discarded during orthopedic procedures) and bone cells (obtained from healthy bone chips) -- were grown and isolated.
All cultures were obtained from different patients. In addition, each of the three cell types that were simultaneously subjected to the various tests all came from different patients. The cultures were subjected twice a week, over a period of two weeks, to the healing hands of three experienced TT practitioners. During that time, the cultures also underwent sham treatments, or they received no stimulation at all. Each experiment was repeated three times at a minimum.
TT was performed by sweeping hand motions at least 4-10 inches above the plate without ever touching the specimen itself, for a period of 10 minutes, twice a week, directing positive intentions through the hands. Control groups of the cultures underwent sham treatments-- random hand motions without any thoughts or intentions-- or they received no treatment at all. All cultures were assessed at the same time. The results were obtained by statistical analysis and were rather surprising: TT resulted in a measurable change in all three cell cultures. Osteoblasts (bone cells) showed a significant increase in cell growth, compared to the untreated cells; a slightly smaller increase was seen in fibroblasts (cultures from neonatal foreskin). But the largest increase in growth compared to the control group occurred in tenoctytes (cells derived from hamstring tendon). Human touch as the capacity to affect cell growth and thereby has a real healing potential. More studies are needed, but the findings give hope to many patients who suffer from abnormal cell growth-- in particular, cancer patients. By and large, energy medicine treatments, in particular TT, promise significant benefits for our bodies. |
