allergiesAllergies???  Us Too.

First and foremost, get your atlas checked.  If your atlas is misaligned, that puts nerve pressure on the brain stem, which effects the entire body, even your allergies.

Try a sinus flush.  You can get a Neti Pot or a similar sinus flush/rinse kit at Whole Foods or at your local drug store.  Follow the package instructions, and breathe easier!

Is your diet contributing?  There are specific foods that contribute to mucus production in the body, which contributes to your congestion.

Diet Don'ts

Try cutting all or some of the following foods from your diet while you are sniffling and sneezing to limit their contribution to your mucus production:
  • Milk - Dairy products in any form are mucus forming in the body.  This includes butter, cheese, cottage cheese, milk, yogurt, etc.  Try olive oil on your salad instead of a creamy dressing.
  • Eggs - Though eggs are not "dairy" they are mucus forming in the body and should be avoided when congested.
  • Sugar - Try substituting honey or molasses, but avoid refined sugar of any type.
  • Salt - Try substituting coarsely ground pepper and savory herbs, or adding powdered kelp to curb your salt craving.
  • Meat - Avoid red meat.  Fish or chicken are better when avoiding producing mucus.
  • Flour and Flour Products - When heated and baked at high temperatures, flour changes to a mucus-forming substance.

Diet Do's

  • Cayenne - Try adding a shake or two of cayenne to a glass of water.  This helps to flush mucus out of the body and give your immune system a quick boost.
  • Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar - Stir one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into a glass of warm water and drink (up to three times/day).  Apple cider vinegar is medicinal and very beneficial.

Actually, my story begins in adolescence.  I wanted to try out for cheerleading but I had such persistent back pain that I couldn't imagine doing all the jumping around that I would have to do.  That was the first thing I "gave up on" because of my back.  My mother, being the good mother that she was, took me to our doctor who did x-rays and I was told us that my fifth lumbar vertebrae was "partially open" and I should just be glad that I was able to walk.

Throughout the years, I tried not to let my back keep me from other activities that I found enjoyable...cross country skiing, gardening or biking.  But I could never do them with the seemingly effortless verve and enthusiasm as others in my group could.  I would always seem to pay a big price in back pain for the next few weeks but rest seemed to help and I just accepted this as my way of life.

When I moved to Austin, my back pain escalated to the extent that I walked with a cane..when I could walk at all.  I walk a lot in my job and work became a nightmare.  I felt that I was facing a bleak future and might not be able to work any longer and support myself.  I was in such extreme pain from my back and down my left leg and foot that there came a time that I seriously thought about going into the garage and turning on the car.  I'm ashamed of having had those thoughts and I only express them here to show how very desperate and hopeless I became.

My journey to this point was not without serious attempts at finding help.  I worked with an acupuncturist who saw that I was not responding and thought that chiropractic work might help.  I saw the chiropractor she recommended and had two appointments a week with a massage therapist and the chiropractor.  I also continued to work with the acupuncturist.  After a few months of this intensive treatment, when I still got no real relief, the chiropractor ordered an MRI.  When she became aware of what the true picture of what my lower spine was like, she discharged me as a patient, telling me that she could not help me and I needed to have surgery.

I then saw a surgeon, from a very respected group here in Austin, who thought cortisone injections might be of some help.  Within two months I had four spinal cortisone injections and began working with a physical therapist in a pool as it seemed to be the only way that I could move my body that did not send me into spasms of pain.  When that continued to be fruitless, I consulted a neurosurgeon for a second opinion.

The neurosurgeon, realizing that I had tried every other modality that he could think of, agreed to operate.  I thought that this was my only chance.  I was terribly frightened of having someone perform surgery on my spine, but I pinned all my hopes onto having this surgery and just made myself believe that this would somehow make the rest of my life at least tolerable.  The surgery was scheduled for December 5th of last year and my sister and her husband came from Phoenix to be with me.  We drove to the hospital before dawn on a very cold morning and all of the processes, procedures and consents needed to get me into surgery were completed.  I was taken into the surgical suite, moved to the operating table, anesthetized and intubated.

Imagine my shock and dismay when I awoke and discovered that the surgery had not been performed!  At the last (very last) minute the surgeon decided that he could not view my spine sufficiently to perform the delicate surgery he was anticipating that I needed.  He cancelled the surgery.

Well, he may as well have told me that he was canceling the rest of my life.  I did not know where to turn or what to do.  I was totally hopeless.  My office manager had been seeing Dr. Sweeney and suggested that I see him.  I made an appointment out of sheer desperation but I did not have any real belief that this would be anything but another failed attempt.  Remember, another chiropractor told me that chiropractic could not help me.

I showed up at the office for that first visit in a foul mood to say the least.  Driving from Cedar Park to 12th and Nueces during rush hour traffic is never anyone's idea of a good time and my back and leg were in terrible spasm from sitting in the car for that period of time.  I had my x-rays and returned later that day for what I thought would be just another waste of time and money.  Imagine my incredible joy when, after that first session, my pain was literally cut in half!

To say I was in shock would be the proverbial understatement of the year!  Well, I thought, this might have helped but it couldn't possibly continue.  How in the world did lightly pressing on my neck under my jawline while Dr. Sweeney did some intense isometric exercise cause my pain to lessen?  What kind of chiropractic methodology was this?

Little by little I came to understand what was happening and I could not deny that I was getting better, really better.  The day that I did away with my cane was an awesome day!  The day I walked up the stairs at work instead of taking the elevator was an awesome day.  The day that I pulled weeds out of my garden beds and spread bags of mulch around my trees and bushes was a terrifically awesome day!  I am having more and more awesome days.  But the very most wonderful day of all was the day I was able to get on an airplane and fly to Wisconsin to meet my newest grandson.

I am moved to tears of gratitude that I found this wonderful lifesaving treatment.  If you are suffering, may my story give you hope.
