Issue No. 19

July/August  2012

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE

Greetings!

Greetings!

This issue will have to hold you until August.
It has been a busy month and a half. I love my job; One day its filming the graduates from a private high school, the next day is 3-4 year olds graduating from Montessori, follow that up with a lecture on Autism and throw in an annual AGM. What does that give you? My past week.

The variety of the work is what I thrive on. So lets mix it up and keep it fresh! I strive to help each client find something unique and different in the way they deliver their services and or products. For me each video is a statement, a record of an event, a company, or a person. I truly believe I am creating history. When the memories fade all that is left is the video. When you want to impress and leave your mark its the video that will hold up.

I look back on my own life and the memories and events that occurred, although time has began to obscure these moments. But every once in a while I pull out that old wedding video of mine, or the birth of one of my sons, or their Bar Mitzvah at 13
Or perhaps their graduation from high school, or  even our last trip to Vegas (well maybe not that)  and...
I can relive these moments once again.

Sincerely,

David Cooperstone

QUESTION OF THE
MONTH

What should I know about shooting my own video? (Part 2)

So you decided not to hire me and are doing it yourself! Well in Part 2, we focus on the 2nd step of any production; Shooting. You hopefully have completed your pre-production.
Remember the process is always reflected in the product!

Plan on shooting lots of extra footage and having a sufficient amount of time to do so. The more footage you capture, including various angles and sizes of shots will give you ample choices in the post-production (editing) phase. A few technical tips: use a tripod, and an external light source.
If you are shooting inside use a lapel mic or external mic so you can get as close as possible to the sound source.

Rehearse and record scenes if possible and review them on a TV or on the camera. Work with light sources coming from behind you, don't shoot into the light. Start recordings a few seconds before action and end them a few seconds after the action. Don't follow all the action, let the action move in and out of frame. Avoid zooming excessively, if you zoom in and out hold the shot at both the start and end of the zoom. Don't forget close ups to show detail and emotion.

Now you may see why you need a professional. In any case in August, post-production.
