For two years, Denver Green Jobs Initiative (DGJI) has trained Northeast Denver workers for great careers in energy efficiency, sustainable construction, and solar.

DGJI was a collaborative project, led by Mi Casa and funded by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), to provide disadvantaged workers in Denver with new opportunities for career path employment. The project ends in mid-January.

Though the green industry has not yet produced the volume of jobs once hoped for, DGJI was a huge success!

DGJI trained 513 workers, and of these, 206 were placed in full-time jobs. The project was recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor as one of the most successful in 2010-11 for job-placement. As a result, DGJI program strategies were included in DOL's "Promising Practices" resource guide for workforce development.

photos of DGJI programs"There is a gap between the skills employers need and the skills most workers have," says DGJI Project Manager Rick Lawton. "Denver Green Jobs Initiative was able to bridge that divide for individuals who face barriers to employment."

Hector is a great example. He enrolled in training at DGJI while he was homeless and living in a shelter. Hector spent more than a decade in prison and found it extremely difficult to restart his career. But with help from DGJI, Hector secured full-time employment earning $27 an hour. As a result, Hector is no longer homeless and is looking forward to a long career with many opportunities for advancement.

Though DGJI training has concluded, participants can still access career coaching and job-placement assistance through January.

THANK YOU to DGJI partners and the Northeast Denver community for making the project a success!

Mi Casa continues to focus on Career Development as a central strategy to achieve our mission of economic success.

Mi Casa learned from the implementation of DGJI and will carry this knowledge forward to ensure career-training programs are successfully preparing workers for promising careers.

Mi Casa Resource Center logo Featured Supporter: Season To Share

Season to Share logo file Mi Casa is proud to have received past support from Denver Post Charities, a McCormick Foundation Fund, for our Youth & Family Development programs.

Denver Post Charities is an ongoing and generous supporter of Mi Casa's afterschool enrichment programs for economically disadvantaged youth.

Thanks to funding from Denver Post Charities, Mi Casa served 500 children in afterschool programs during the 2010-11 school year. Research shows that 3 to 6 p.m. is the most dangerous time for youth, and Mi Casa's programs provide a much needed safe and enriching place to go for children who would otherwise go home to empty houses and no supervision.

Season To Share is a campaign of Denver Post Charities - a holiday fundraising program designed to make a significant difference for those less fortunate in our community.

Every donation made to Season To Share is matched at 50% by the McCormick Foundation. And 100% of all donations, plus the match, is distributed to local nonprofits like Mi Casa that serve our neighbors in need. All admin expenses are covered by The Denver Post and the McCormick Foundation.

With the New Year around the corner, thoughts inevitably turn to the many blessings in our lives - family, friends, employment, housing, health.

But there are many in our community for whom life is much more challenging.

Consider supporting Season To Share, and the work they do to move our neighbors out of poverty and into self-sufficiency.

All donations to Season To Share are matched at 50% and distributed to great organizations like Mi Casa!
