It took seven years and three times asking for help, but Ted is confident that he's back on his feet - for good. Ted, a graduate of Mi Casa's Green Energy & Construction training program, was recently hired at Providers' Resource Clearinghouse (PRC) as a laborer loading and unloading trucks for minimum wage. He's already been promoted and received a raise, and more opportunities for advancement are on the horizon.

"I love my job, and I hope to be in it for the rest of my working life," says Ted, who lost his construction job when the economic recession coincided with a blown transmission in his truck. With no transportation and in the midst of a messy divorce that left Ted displaced and depressed, Ted was barely scraping by.

"I'm a single father, and when I couldn't provide for my son, I felt worthless," Ted says. "We were eating peanut butter and jelly every day. It's miserable and scary to be in that position." To read the rest of Ted's story, click here.

photo of energy efficiency upgradesIn 2010, Mi Casa saved nearly $8,000 in energy costs thanks to energy-efficiency upgrades provided by the Nonprofit Energy Efficiency Program (NEEP). Through NEEP, Mi Casa has reduced its energy consumption and offset increasing energy bills so that more of Mi Casa's resources can go toward helping low-income families achieve lasting economic stability.

A total of $66,640 was invested in energy efficiency renovations at Mi Casa's main facility located at 360 Acoma Street through NEEP. The projected annual energy savings are 27.6 kW; 41,936 kWh; 1,204 therms; and 83,941 pounds of CO2.

Some of the efficiency upgrades made to Mi Casa's home include: domestic hot water and pipes wrapped; direct digital control system installed; six old AC units replaced with Energy Star units; HVAC equipment insulated; 112 light fixtures and ballasts replaced with CFL bulbs and energy efficient ballasts.

Mi Casa Resource Center logo 5 Things to Know about Charitable Giving

1. The benefits of giving are not just for the charity: there are tax advantages for donors, too.

2. Giving to charity is a chance to reflect what's important to you: with charitable giving, you can put your money behind organizations / causes close to your heart.

3. Cash isn't the only king: you can also gift IRAs, annuities, stocks or other securities, and real estate.

4. There are more than 1,300 registered charities in Denver: there's bound to be at least one that does work you want to support.

5. Your favorite charities need your support! Flexible, general support dollars raised from individual donations make up an indispensible source of revenue for your favorite charity.
