Diocesan Spelling Bee Champion ~ Sara Prischak
On Friday, May 4, 2012, sixth grader, Sara Prischak, accompanied by her family and teacher Mrs. Kathy Holland, joined 21 other students from schools around the Diocese at St. Mark's Center. She earned the right to compete in the Diocesan Spelling Bee by first placing in the top three in her homeroom and then facing off against 17 other students in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades at OLP.

This was not the first time she would compete at the Diocesan level. When she was in 4th grade Sara also represented OLP and came in 2nd place. Sara Prischak

This year it was down to Sara and a student from Dubois. The competition kept going back and forth. From beginning to end the Spelling Bee was a total of 48 rounds.

When it gets down to the final two contestants, each one must spell two challenge words correctly. These are words that are not on the study list. If one competitor spells a word wrong, the next one has then has the opportunity to spell two new words correctly.

This could be it-the opportunity to bring home the first place medal. Sara had spelled her first word correctly. Then she was given the next word. Who would have thought it would be the word she missed in the 4th grade when she earned second place?

R-H-U-B-A-R-B. This word has very special meaning to Sara as she learned from her mistake of 2 years ago and spelled it correctly to win the title. She even brought rhubarb to school the following Monday to share with her classmates. Her mom Tara baked her a special strawberry-rhubarb pie to celebrate.

Congratulations Sarah! We are proud of you!
