In Evolution - being more of you:

The "Yoga Life"

Yoga has become a competitive sport in America; no doubt this makes the ancients laugh out loud; while they roll over in their graves!

Leave it to Americans to take something that is about awareness and balance...and make it an extreme sport! I recently read an article about a yoga teacher who said excitedly, "I use yoga to
get high on my body all day!!"

Who knew? Yoga is the new cocaine!

Seriously though, that's not what authentic yoga is about. In Sanskrit, the word yoga means "union." Yoga is intended to
bring all four aspects of you - physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual - into union; so you may better create awareness,
balance, health, and well-being.

Yoga is not now, nor was it ever, intended to be used as mind control, an obsessive pursuit of perfection, or as a means to
believe you are "better" than others.

That is man's mind - and mankind's - misinterpretation of yoga.

I recently visited a yoga store; the clothes, the wheat grass shots, and the fresh vegetable juices were great! But the atmosphere - and the attitude of the people who worked there - was awful!

Though the store purported to be all about "The Yoga Life," the
employees behaved with a distinct air of arrogance, exclusivity,
and detachment. Honestly, I was treated like I was buck naked at Tiffany's diamond counter on Fifth Avenue...rather than simply purchasing a wheat grass shot at a yoga store!

Seriously...yuck!

The thing about behaving - or believing - you are "better" than
others, is that it just proves the opposite. Believing that you
are "better" than anyone else, is a sure-fire sign you lack true
self-worth.

Spiritually speaking, no one is "better" than anyone else; that is,
no one human being is more worthy - or more valuable - than any other human being. We're all just different people at different junctures on our own path.

Indeed, some people are intellectually smarter than others;
some are richer, more mature, more compassionate, more balanced, more experienced, even more evolved than others.
But no one is more worthy or valuable than any other.

How many smart people do you know with no common sense?
So-called successful people with a lack of integrity? Powerful
people who are emotionally immature? How many rich people do you know who are unhappy? How many people who seemingly "have it all," have made enormous missteps? (Elliot Spitzer, Tiger Woods, Martha Stewart, Bill Clinton, Tom De Lay, and Bernie Madoff...just to name a few!!)

We're all on our own journey, with our own lessons to learn,
and our own missteps to make. There is no magic key - or
"secret" - that makes us "better" than anyone else, including
yoga.

And when you become conscious, balanced, and mature enough
to recognize, accept, and embrace this truth...you no longer
possess any need to "prove" anything to anyone. Truly.

You simply "be" who you are...fully and freely.

Authentic yoga - union - supports you to:

See, release, and receive that which you need to be in
  clear and accurate awareness.

Fully experience all aspects of your self.

Be well-grounded in the actual reality of your life.

It should also support you to address - rather than suppress or
ignore - your challenges.

If not, yoga becomes a subtle - but powerful - vehicle to promote
arrogance and obsessiveness as the means to bypass your reality; all under the guise of pseudo-spirituality.

Pseudo-spirituality - beginning "back in the day" with the
Pharisees - facilitates exclusion, judgment, and blind following.

Authentic spirituality facilitates a profound recognition and
embrace of our shared humanity; and a willingness to treat all others with respect, integrity, dignity, and equanimity.
