As the tragedy continues - and possibly escalates - in Japan, I
honestly haven't known what to share with you about it.
A 9.0 earthquake, tsunami, fires, and now the omnipresent possibility of nuclear disaster...it is unfathomable.
Those of you who know me personally know it is rare that I am
at a loss for words; but the number of dead and missing is so
large I cannot find a way to take it all in, nor the words to share something of real value with you.
And yet, what I do know is that words have great power.
Sometimes just a few, simple words can hold...help...
heal...comfort.
So, what I do encourage you to do - in addition to sending
financial relief if that is possible for you - is to send your words
to the people of Japan.
As much as I do indeed, view Facebook and social networking
as vehicles that must be used wisely, judiciously, and with great
discretion...I do also acknowledge how valuable they can be, especially in times like these.
While many in Japan have no communication vehicles operational
at this time, some do, and more will later. I encourage you,
through your internet tools, to send your words to the people
of Japan...
...words of empathy, acknowledgment, compassion, respect,
fortitude...of faith in the bonds of our shared humanity...can help.
"My thoughts and prayers are with you."
That's all.
And do send your thoughts and prayers. All that is required is
a few minutes of your time and attention. A few moments of contemplation, meditation, prayer - whatever it is that you
do - can make a difference.
NBC news reporter Ann Curry said it well, "rarely has a nation
so powerful, been this vulnerable."
Indeed. There but for the grace of God...go us.
