Child Protection and Public Safety Act Introduced, Hearing Scheduled
On Wednesday, February 23, 2011, Senator Bill Hamrick (R-Carrollton) re-introduced the Child Protection and Public Safety Act as SB 127. The Act, which was originally introduced in 2009 as SB 292, would completely revise the Georgia Code's juvenile court provisions, which govern how our state responds to children and their families in cases of abuse, neglect, violations of law by children, and other circumstances requiring court intervention. The Act reorganizes O.C.G.A. Title 15, Chapter 11 for ease of understanding and application, modernizes substantive provisions to reflect advances in research and practice, brings Georgia into full compliance with federal laws applicable to juvenile court proceedings.
After extensive review by the Senate Judiciary Committee and much work by a community of stakeholders over the last two years, the Act was revised for reintroduction. Now the Senate Judiciary Committee will continue its consideration of the Act with a hearing on SB 127 this coming Monday, February 28, 2011 at 3pm in room 450 of the Captiol. |
