SRSCRO Congressional Staff Workshop

GA & SC Congressional StaffThe SRSCRO hosted a workshop for Congressional staff on August 30 through September 1. Congressional staff from GA and SC (Washington, DC and local) holding the energy/SRS portfolio attended the meeting. It consisted of two half-day meetings related to energy initiatives and a full day tour at the SRS. The half-day meetings consisted of presentations covering the progress of the two new nuclear units under construction at Plant Vogtle; military training uses at SRS; potential test facilities for Small Modular Reactors; research and applications for hydrogen fuel cells; and the shortage of medical isotope production in the US. All of these presentations along with a review of SRSCRO initiatives, including the Nuclear Workforce Initative, provided an excellent overview of the local community efforts related to energy issues. The highlight of the SRS tour was an "up close and personal" visit of the SRS H-Canyon facility operations. The attendees saw first-hand the unique processing capabilities of this national asset. Based upon the success of this workshop, the SRSCRO is planning to host annual workshops in the future.

Youth Leadership Workshop

Youth Workshop

Saturday morning started early for 25 Augusta-area middle and high school youth as they traveled to Fort Gordon for the Unlikely Allies Tour: Emerging Leaders Conference arranged by the Southeast Enterprise Institute, Inc. The SRSCRO's NWI message about nuclear career opportunities was a feature of the September 10 session. Program organizer, Ms. Helen Blocker-Adams commented, "The monthly program is designed in part to motivate young people to change how they think and act. Our focus is to also expose youth to emerging industries." SRSCRO NWI Program Manager, Mindy Mets, explained the various types of jobs available in the nuclear industry for those prepared with the proper combination of job readiness skills. Many participants thought that earning a nuclear engineering degree was the only way to be part of the nuclear industry, but participants soon learned about many ways to join a high-paying career field through education and training programs available locally. The career message was one part of an entertaining, energetic program that provided a message of responsibility and opportunity for area youth.

This peer exchange provided an opportunity for ECA members and other interested parties to discuss ECA member priorities and issues and learn about recent DOE management and organization changes, DOE budget planning, the Asset Revitalization Task Force Report to Congress, and the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future Draft Report. The participants received presentations from Dave Huizenga, Acting Assistant Secretary for EM; Dr. Pete Lyons, Assistant Secretary for NE; Ms. Neile Miller, Principal Deputy Administrator for NNSA; and Tim Frazier, DFO of the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future. DOE also used this meeting to announce the next steps for the Asset Revitalization Initiative. These steps build on the recommendations from the Task Force on Asset Revitalization, which was convened by Secretary Chu in February 2011, and will facilitate local efforts to support beneficial reuse options at DOE sites, including reindustrialization, manufacturing, clean energy development, nature preserves, and educational centers.
