Educators Examine Nuclear Industry Careers
"I had never been to SRS until today. It helps to see the Site and hear about the training our students need for these jobs," one school counselor commented after attending an Educator Field Study on August 4. About thirty-five educators including superintendents, principals, and career counselors from Barnwell, Bamberg and Hampton county school districts, toured the Savannah River Site (SRS) to learn about its history and current missions.
SRS human resource managers talked with the educators about science, math, and communication skills students need to develop for SRS jobs. They explained local training options and hiring trends. The SRSCRO Nuclear Workforce Initiative (NWI) program manager explained the long-term need for these same skills beyond the boundaries of SRS, since commercial nuclear industry expansion projects are underway at Plant Vogtle and V. C. Summer and the nation.
The Educator Field Study was organized by the Lower Savannah Regional Education Center and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions Education Outreach in partnership with Savannah River Remediation, MOX, and the SRSCRO K-12 NWI Committee. In the future, Educator Field Study opportunities will be provided for other CSRA school districts. For more information contact Mindy Mets. |

Surplus Plutonium Disposition Supplemental EIS - Public Scoping Meeting
The SRSCRO made a formal statement at the Surplus Plutonium Disposition Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SPD Supplemental EIS) public scoping meeting on August 17, 2010 held in North Augusta, South Carolina. At the meeting, DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced its intent to revise the scope of the SPD Supplemental EIS to include disposition alternatives for plutonium declared surplus and additional alternatives for disposition of certain non-pit plutonium materials currently in safe storage at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina. In its letter, the SRSCRO states "With this supplemental EIS, DOE is looking for a strategy that would allow it to efficiently combine all elements of its disposition program. We support investigation of all the disposal options proposed and believe disposing of weapons grade plutonium through producing energy in the TVA reactors or other commercial reactors is a good thing. The sooner a decision is made the quicker the waste can be removed. We are confident that SRS has the technical capability and could accomplish any of the missions safely and protective of the environment." To find out more, please contact Rick McLeod. |
