Riverwalk Market Fair Continues There are still five weeks left of Northfield's Saturday morning art and food fair. Fall is the perfect time of year to take in this fun event. Enjoy the original artwork, artisan foods, and beautiful fresh flowers offered by the many participating artists. Just follow the tents that begin at Bridge Square and run north along the beautiful magnificent Cannon River walkway, all the while listening to the ever-changing music being performed along the way.

I will have my tent set up the following weeks: September 17th, September 24th, and October 2nd. Stop by and see my latest paintings, as well as a new assortment of prints and cards. (Please read the Upcoming Events and the other articles to see where I'll be showing my work on the weekends of September 10/11, October 8/9, and October 14/15/16.) |

Aquabord triptych of Northern Woods
Fall scenes, such as this one near Flagstaff, Arizona, are my favorite to paint. There is nothing more beautiful to me than the incredible shades of gold and rust found in the fall foliage of aspen and birch trees. When the sun strikes these tress highlighted against their green backdrop of tall evergreens the sight is quite magnificent. When planning this painting, I decided it needed to be quite large in order to convey the vastness of this woods that paralleled Potato Lake in the foreground. I chose to create a triptych using three 15" x 22" Aquabord panels. The challenge for me was to create a continuous flow of trees, water, and shadows as the painting moved from one panel to another. I started the series by beginning with the center panel, establishing the color palette and value scale that would continue onto the adjacent panels. The right-hand panel had its own unique challenge in that I needed to create the strong shadows that extended from the trees and followed the contour of the slightly uphill land. In the left-hand panel I was faced with having to convey the density of the woods bathed in intense sunlight at the tree tops contrasted with the intense shadows at the trunks. The final stage was to create the foreground of water and golden grasses so that it looked like a natural and uninterrupted expanse. This was done by placing all three panels next to one another (on the floor where I had enough space) and stroking my fully loaded brush in a continuous motion across all three panels. Although it was a long painting process, I truly enjoyed working on a piece of this size with all its varied challenges. I'm already planning my next triptych! |

7th Annual Studio arTour of South Central Minnesota
 | Cones in the Breeze, 2010
| A new adventure for me will be showing my watercolor paintings at the Studio arTour that features the work of 46 regional artists from Northfield, Cannon Falls, and Faribault. Their art will be on display at 23 various studios in the area on Saturday, October 15 (10 am - 6pm) and Sunday, October 16 (also 10-6).
I will be displaying my work at the Sunset Studio located at 10754 Farrel Ave. in Northfield. There will be 6 other artists at this site showing their work and demonstrating their techniques, including potters, fiber artists, jewelers, a glass artisan, a photographer and a bookmaker.
Our studio will also be open on Friday, October 14 from 4 - 8 p.m.
Please come and join us on any of these three days for an art adventure - and try your hand at making some of your own art during our hands-on demonstrations, plus enjoy coffee and treats while you browse!
It's a beautiful time of year to enjoy the fall colors of the area along the Cannon River, the local apple orchards and the unique shops in downtown Northfield . . . and perhaps even do some Christmas shopping from our regional artists! Hope to see you there! .
For more information on the Studio arTour / directions Look behind "Door #7" on the website to find the studio (and a map) where I'll be showing my work.
