K. Miller Reflections  .   .   .

                                      a watercolor newsletter

Hello from K. Miller Watercolors!

I hope you have enjoyed the amazing weather we've experienced these past two months with the warm sunshine and above normal temperatures, perfect weather for outdoor activities of all kinds.  For me this has included many weekend art fairs in both Northfield and Red Wing - it's been wonderful visiting with the many friends, family members and art lovers who have stopped by.

This is the last 2010 issue of K. Miller Watercolors and it will be a rather abbreviated one.  As winter approaches it seems one's focus and energies turn to the important events of the upcoming holiday seeason.  For me this also means a trip to New York to visit my daughter and her family, as well as some travel time in the Southwest.  Consequently, this issue will not contain the usual featured artist portion (to return in January with Andrew Wyeth) but rather only two components: first, an article informing you of the upcoming art events in November and December, and, secondly, an article highlighting a few of my most recent paintings.

I also want to take this time to extend my best wishes to you for joy, happiness, peace and blessings during this special time of the year.

Sincerely,

Kathy Miller

"New Works" to be shown at Northfield gallery

 in November

The ArtOnWater Gallery in Northfield will present an exhibit of my watercolor paintings from November 4 - 14 as part of its new blackbox (back) gallery.  The show, entitled "New Works", will begin with a Sneak Preview on Thursday, November 4th from 3 - 9 pm.  The majority of the pieces displayed at this time will be paintings done in my more "traditional" watercolor look.  On Thursday, November 11th, there will be an Artist's Reception from 7 - 8 pm, and at this time, in addition to the traditional work, the exhibit will feature paintings done in my

"new Aquabord style." (Read the article below highlighting some of these paintings.)  Also, on Sunday, November 14th from 2 - 3 pm, there will be an Artist Talk that will include an Aquabord demonstration to give you a better idea of what

this new product and technique are all about.

ArtOnWater Gallery is located at 217 S. Water Street in Northfield.  The regular gallery hours are Thursday to Saturday from 4 - 7 pm (Sundays only on pre-scheduled event dates).

Please join us if you are able on Thursday, November 11th from 7 - 8 pm for an evening of art, conversation and refreshments, and on Sunday, November 14th from 2 - 3 pm for the Artist Talk.  It would be fun to see you!

New Aquabord paintings inspired by nature's beauty

On a trip to Winona this summer, I came across an absolutely beautiful garden that begged to be painted and became the inspiration for several of my latest paintings. The flower planting was so massive it felt as though you were in the midst of an open prairie, surround-

ed by clusters of purple coneflowers in a sea of delicate yellow and white flowers.  This breathtaking sight was located outside the entrance to Winona's relatively new Maritime Museum which houses a wonderful collection of nautical paintings, as well as a room filled with Impressionistic works by Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Pissarro and others.

My goal while painting this scene was to capture the movement of the flowers as they swayed to and fro in the breeze, as well as the bright sunlight that bounced off the slender petals of the coneflowers. I also wanted to portray the vibrancy of the large flowers, while at the same time expressing the delicacy of myriads of small white and yellow blossoms.  I chose to use the clay-coated Aquabord instead of the more traditional watercolor paper because it seemed the perfect way to reach these goals - from experience I had learned that with this product it was possible to achieve both the brilliancy of color and the clean, crisp look l desired. The final result is shown in the painting above, A Flowering Garden.

Another painting inspired by the incredible beauty of nature comes from photos taken this fall on a late afternoon walk in the prairie of the Carleton Arboretum in Northfield. The winding path was lined with tall stems of Blazing Stars with their iridescent magenta flowerheads that sparkled in the sunlight.  Atop many of the flowers sat the beautiful monarch butterfly as it silently gathered its nectar. Once again I decided that in order to capture the brilliant colors of the monarch and the flowers I should use the Aquabord.  The challenge for me was how to portray the density of all the background plants without having this take away from the foreground flower and butterflies and thus becoming the focal point of the painting.  Using the fine-tip black marker to softly define these shapes was the solution I used.  See the end result above in the painting entitled Monarchs and Blazing Star.
