Summer 2012 Volume 12 No. 7
Greetings! Greetings! What a bouquet of celebrations are shared at this time of year! We have just rejoiced on Mother's Day honoring our mothers and our heavenly Mother. During June, we turned in prayer to the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. From June 21st to July 4th, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) dedicated these fourteen days as the "Fortnight for Freedom," a time of dedicated prayer for our country culminating on Independence Day, the birthday of our great country. Dioceses and parishes around the country scheduled special events that supported a great national campaign of teaching and witness for both our Christian and American heritage of liberty and religious freedom. Let us continue long after July 4th to intercede for conversion and reparation for our country. For the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us, let us pray that we will always remain one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. God Bless America! Your sister in Christ,

FR. KEVIN'S KORNER

Magnificat CST Spiritual Advisor
"For Good Men to Do Nothing?"
Returning from Ireland recently, I felt downcast over the state of affairs there. So much has gone wrong in the Church: so many disappointments, so many failures, and worse then anything, such virulent criticism and opposition to the Bishops and clergy. This is not something we have experienced in Ireland until recently. While in Europe, Sr. Briege and I went to England to give a parish retreat. On this retreat we met some English Catholics who were not the kind of people I would normally associate with. They were the from the upper echelons of English society; a party of about twenty people with Sr. Briege, myself and the parish priest. I was quite astonished at how proud they were of their Catholic faith, how utterly respectful they were of the Church, and how lovingly they cherished their good priest who had served them over the years.
Then I returned to the U.S. One of the first things I experienced was the interview on EWTN with Raymond Arroyo, Cardinal Wuerl and Archbishop Lori. As you may know, it concerned pending legislation affecting religious freedoms here in the United States. This was a wake-up call to me because of the seriousness with which these two churchmen viewed the outcome of the establishment of such legislation in the country. What concerned me was that they saw it as a very real threat to the freedom to practice religion here in the U.S. They were asked about the unity of the hierarchy on this matter and they assured us that the Bishops were united to a man and determined that they would not yield in the matter. They also referred to the government's steely determination to not even discuss any further what was intended in the new law. It was as though both sides had drawn a line in the sand and were saying "thus far and no further."
What disturbed me also is how closely it reflected what appears to be happening in my own little country. For quite a while now the government and the public media have been conducting a campaign of defamation and vilification of the Catholic clergy and certain Catholic Bishops in particular. They are also threatening to take over the Catholic school system and strip it of any reference to Catholicism or Christian faith. They are not even subtle anymore about their intentions. One hesitates to be conspiratorial about governments and movements in culture and society, but it is becoming very clear to me that there are forces at work here in the United States and certainly in Europe that are no longer willing to tolerate influences or authority that are not coming directly from the state. It seems that there is to be no room for religion and religious experience in the public square.
The framers of the American Constitution were very careful to include freedom of conscience and freedom of religion because they were aware of the important part that religion plays in the life of the individual and in the life of society in general. These were not foolish or stupid men. Edmund Burke, the Anglo-Irish Parliamentarian, famously warned that "for evil to triumph it is sufficient for good men to do nothing."
The Holy Spirit is guiding counsels of Cardinal Dolan and his fellow Bishops. I am so proud of Cardinal Dolan's interventions and of the Bishops on EWTN. The final stroke which convinced me of the seriousness of their intent was when Archbishop Lori stressed their call for a "Fortnight for Freedom." I was overjoyed when I heard the importance which he laid on these two weeks of intercessory prayer. However, my joy in this was tinged with sadness when I realize that my own Irish Bishops, in all the years of the troubles and in the present crisis in the Catholic Church in Ireland, never even once asked the people to pray. Had they done so, I am sure that the Lord would have heeded His people and healed them long, long before now.
Prayer is the heart of Magnificat. Here is something that the Lord has put before us. During these two weeks, June 21st (the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More) to July 4th (Independence Day), we must pray concerning all of these issues. We must go before the Lord and plead that He will help us, and deliver us from this darkness. We must take up our Rosary in this Lepanto-like crusade both in Europe and in the United States. We must beg Our Lady of Victory to help the Church now as she did then. May the Holy Spirit pour out upon you the grace of zeal for the House of God at this moment. And may I wish you every blessing and a great outpouring of the gifts of the Spirit into your lives and communities.
Yours Sincerely in Jesus Christ,
Fr. Kevin

LITURGY OF THE HOURS
Office of Readings
Second Reading from a homily by
St. Bede the Venerable, priest
Mary proclaims the greatness of the Lord working in her.
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior. With these words Mary first acknowledges the special gifts she has been given. Then she recalls God's universal favors, bestowed unceasingly on the human race.
When a man devotes all his thoughts to the praise and service of the Lord, he proclaims God's greatness. His observance of God's commands, moreover, shows that he has God's power and greatness always at heart. His spirit rejoices in God his savior and delights in the mere recollection of his creator who gives him hope for eternal salvation.
These words are often for all God's creations, but especially for the Mother of God. She alone was chosen, and she burned with spiritual love for the son she so joyously conceived. Above all other saints, she alone could truly rejoice in Jesus, her savior, for she knew that he who was the source of eternal salvation would be born in time in her body, in one person both her own son and her Lord.
For the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. Mary attributes nothing to her own merits. She refers all her greatness to the gift of the one whose essence is power and whose nature is greatness, for he fills with greatness and strength the small and the weak who believe in him.
She did well to add: and holy is his name, to warn those who heard, and indeed all who would receive his words, that they must believe and call upon his name. For they too could share in everlasting holiness and true salvation according to the words of the prophet: and it will come to pass, that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. This is the name she spoke of earlier: and my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
Therefore it is an excellent and fruitful custom of holy Church that we should sing Mary's hymn at the time of evening prayer. By meditating upon the incarnation, our devotion is kindled, and by remembering the example of God's Mother, we are encouraged to lead a life of virtue. Such virtues are best achieved in the evening. We are weary after day's work and worn out by our distractions. The time for rest is near, and our minds are ready for contemplation.
In each Newsletter, the CST includes a selection from the Liturgy of the Hours which is the public prayer of the Church. It is our hope that you have enjoyed the readings and they enhance your own personal prayer. If you would like more information, visit www.divineoffice.org

"THE SONG OF MARY: THE VISITATION"
by Paulette Renaudin
"One of the most beautiful moments in history was when pregnancy met pregnancy - when childbearers became the first heralds of the King of Kings. From that day to this, Christians have been the defenders of the family and the love of generation," says Bishop Fulton J. Sheen.
At the Visitation, Mary went in haste to help her cousin Elizabeth. Mary showed such courage to leave Nazareth and visit Elizabeth. She was guided by the Holy Spirit in her obedience. She journeyed five days to Ein Karem in Judah, and we know travel was not easy then. When Mary greeted her cousin, the babe in Elizabeth's womb leapt for joy. In Mary and Elizabeth's pregnancies, we see nothing is impossible with God. All the longing of thousands of years are fulfilled in that one moment with John the Baptist greeting Christ, the Son of God. Mary had perfect trust in God. She abandoned herself to the divine plan. We must emulate her example of trust in our own lives. Mary's humility is what brings about her wondrous joy! We experience her joy too, because Mary is bringing Jesus to us. This "Good News" must be shared with others.
Just as Mary went to greet Elizabeth, our Magnificat meals give us an opportunity to bring the joy of Jesus and Mary to everyone who comes to a meal. The joy of the "Good News" means we must find someone with which to share it. A speaker with Magnificat is bursting with the "Good News" of what the Lord has done in her life, and wants to share it through her testimony. The Visitation scene is played out over and over as women from all over the world greet their sisters with a holy hug, as Mary and Elizabeth did. We have the same opportunity to bring new "spiritual life" into the world with love and joy. The Holy Spirit is ever at work transforming hearts and renewing minds during a meal. The meal setting is the "flourishing garden of life" referred to by Pope John XXIII. Gardens are some of the most beautiful places on earth.
We have such expectant faith as we enter into the celebration of a Magnificat meal. The components of a shared meal, joyful praise and worship, the testimony of how God has worked in a woman's life, all add up to a nurturing spiritual experience. The Holy Spirit has free reign to heal hearts and bring joy and consolation to each and every person who attends. We, in Magnificat, relish each meal as an occasion to minister Our Lady's love to whomever she sends our way. Through our Baptism, especially our Baptism in the Holy Spirit, we are prepared to go into the whole world to proclaim the "Good News" of Jesus Christ. Mary has gone before all of us, we joyfully follow her lead.

WALNUT CREEK, CA CHAPTER
REPORT ON THE WALK FOR LIFE
by Grace Karwowski
Felice Santos on fire!
The Magnificat Servants of the Immaculata (SOTI) banner was flying high at this HHS Mandate Protest Rally held in San Francisco on Saturday, March 24th.
The Walnut Creek Chapter was well represented with Mary Johnstone, Coordinator, Grace Karwowski, Felice Santos, and other members of the Service Team participating in the Rally. Their beloved Bishop Salvadore Cordileone was a speaker and the Holy Spirit moved with immense power. The Bishop seemed pleased to see Magnificat in the crowd when he looked out from the podium.
During the event, two protesters moved in carrying large orange signs with black letters. Our signs were not large enough to block the signs, but the Holy Spirit took over and lifted the Magnificat sign to overlap the other signs. Next, the banner was lifted all the way up and the orange signs completely disappeared. The crowd shouted in joy at what they witnessed! This was a providential sign from Mother Mary it was an incredible witness of God's power. We heard many testimonies, including the organizers, of how people were touched when the banner started floating across and into place. Others told us when angels carried our banner, it was like Mary's mantle over the group. The protesters were loud and vulgar. A protester side-stepped over to our side and asked a few questions.
Our sisters from Immaculate Heart of Mary, Brentwood
Grace spent 20 minutes witnessing to him about why abortion is murder and explaining the culture of death. This young man thought it was ok to abort. The young man was touched when Grace explained about the value of human life. He asked me, "What is the other option if not abortion?" Before I could tell him, he said, "adoption." Grace told him many things as the Holy Spirit led her. He shook her hand and thanked her for explaining all this to him. He did not go back to join the protesters and left. Grace realized if she had not attended the Walk for Life and become informed, she would not have been able to minister to this young man. We know how important Magnificat's presence is in the culture of life. We thank all those who participated and shared in this significant event.

MAGNIFICAT GRAPEVINE, TX CHAPTER
SPONSORS SPANISH BREAKFAST FOR THE FIRST TIME!
In this historic Grapevine Chapter Breakfast, 260 Spanish ladies experienced a festive Magnificat Breakfast in their own language under the guidance of the Grapevine Chapter.
Our Spanish sisters in love the Our Lord!
There has been much interest in starting Spanish Chapters within the Magnificat Ministry. The Grapevine Chapter thought it might be exciting to have a breakfast for the Spanish ladies to experience a Magnificat Meal while they are discerning a chapter of their own.
The Grapevine chapter helped organize and plan the meal with the ladies help. In the words of Barb Serba, South Central Regional Representative, "I wish you all could have been there! We watched 260 Spanish ladies, in love with Our Lord, as they praised, worshiped, and enjoyed a fine meal. Teresa Thompson's testimony was the highlight, and you could feel the excitement of the Holy Spirit the whole day!"
Four priests were there for confession, and a Spanish bookstore brought inventory. The music was led by a Hispanic Group which helped generate an atmosphere of praise. When the program ended, there was not a dry eye in the room. It was a great success and we know Our Lady was honored and pleased. These ladies have requested to go forward to establish their own chapter. We could not be more excited for them! Praise God!

VISITATION on the Island of Malta
by Paulette Renaudin
Jan Tate invited me, a member of Magnificat's Central Service Team (CST), to accompany her on her speaking engagement to Malta to represent the CST, and to be her prayer partner throughout the week. For those of you who may not know Jan, she and her husband Lloyd have been instrumental in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, LA. USA for the last 35 years in preparing and instructing couples for the Sacrament of Matrimony, and giving married couple retreats. Jan is also a trained Spiritual Director, trained in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius for the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
To give you a little history, after much prayer and discernment about their next speaker, Malta Coordinator Mariz Cassar felt led by the Spirit to invite Jan to speak to the women about marriage and family. The invitation came because in 2011, a referendum legalizing divorce in Malta passed by 52.6%. The national consensus now is to strengthen marriage and family.
What an incredible adventure awaited us as we landed on the island of Malta! We were about to embark on a profound cultural and spiritual experience. The Lord always sent his apostles out two by two, and Jan and I were so thankful to be companions on this very special journey for Our Lady. We were warmly welcomed by our Malta Chapter Magnificat sisters. They picked us up and whisked us away to a repast of authentic Maltese food served at Myriam England's home with her husband Richard and her brother John. Myriam founded our Maltese Chapter seventeen years ago and has been so faithful to the ministry ever since.
The first talk, given as a personal testimony at the Magnificat Brunch, was held at the beautiful Villa Arrigo. It began with Holy Mass celebrated by Spiritual Advisor Fr. Hayden Williams, OFM Capuchin. He spoke about sanctifying our daily activity and he said, "Wherever Mary is, Pentecost happens!" He preached about three sins in the

Old Testament the prophets preached against, and are prevalent even today: idolatry, social injustices and political alliances. Mariz Cassar, Coordinator, warmly welcomed everyone, introduced the Service Team and Mrs. Kate Gonzi, spouse of the Prime Minister. Jan began by speaking about the impact our families of origin have on each of us and about the many people who have been significant influences in her life. She also spoke about the challenge of living out a

Sacramental marriage and included some of the teachings on sexuality articulated by Pope John Paul II. Jan's words breathed life into this captive audience. Besides the music ministry for the breakfast, two service team family members also lifted their voices for the glory of God. Marly Cassar's sister, Virginia, came in from Ireland to sing and Anette Cassar's daughter, Annelise, sang Panis Angelicus. Prayer ministry followed for four hours afterward. From there, we went to Fr. Hayden's prayer meeting which included Holy Mass, rosary and adoration. We could feel God's presence in a tangible way because of the Spirit's anointing on Fr. Hayden.
The next morning we went to Myriam England's summer residence, "Song of Songs," for a day of prayer and refreshment for the Service Team. Fr. Hayden began the day with Holy Mass and explained to us that discernment is not between good and bad, but between the good and the holy. He also said, "Whatever does not come from prayer, will destroy itself." After Mass, Jan gave a few directives for personal Spiritual Direction, we had lunch and then prayer ministry for the next few hours. From there we went to St. Patrick's Church so Jan could present a talk on Agape love and living out a Sacramental marriage to married couples. We were especially pleased to meet the spouses of the Service Team who were in attendance. Also in attendance was Msgr. Anton Gouder, Spiritual Director for the Institute for Marriage and Family, a two year Maltese program in which couples are trained in basic relationship skills necessary for a healthy and happy

conjugal marriage. Later that evening, Jan spoke at a Youth for Jesus Meeting. The teens just loved Jan and especially enjoyed her talk. Jan shared a teaching about a "GPS" system. The teens all knew what a "GPS" system is, but Jan explained it as "God's Plan of Salvation." God gives us life on earth, and when it is over we are to return to our heavenly Father. Sometimes, we get off track and God has to recalculate to bring us back on the track to heaven. Jan was right on their wave length, and prayer ministry followed.
Sunday was so beautiful, starting with Holy Mass at St. Patrick's Church, followed by more prayer ministry. We went to lunch with the whole Service Team and they showed us their beautiful island for the rest of the day. Malta has a rich and ancient history and is truly the jewel of the Mediterranean. The city of Valletta is a grand harbor and a beautiful old city with narrow streets and gorgeous flowers. You can see the Mediterranean from every vantage point. Then, we went on to Mdina, the walled city with incredible history. We entered through the Mdina Gate which is gorgeous. We took a buggy ride so we could take in even more of the city and we ate and laughed the entire day. We were
L-r Mariz Cassar, Paulette Renaudin, Jan Tate, Myriam England, Anette Cassar, Angela Salamone, and Rita Petrococchino
so filled with the joy of the Lord!
Jan and I were able to spend the last day in Rome and visited the Church of the Gesu and tour Ignatius' rooms. The visit was a highlight for us since we both enjoy using the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius in our prayer. We walked to the Vatican, took more photos and then said, "Arriverderci Roma!"
The Scripture passage that the Lord gave us upon our return captures the sentiments of our hearts: "O Lord, you mete out peace to us, for it is you who have accomplished all we have done." Isaiah 26: 12. We were blessed more than we could have ever asked or imagined and we became friends with beautiful Maltese people who love the Lord and Our Lady. We will be forever grateful for our Magnificat visitation to Malta and for the generous hospitality shown to us by the Service Team.

ARUBA CHAPTER CELEBRATES
THEIR FIRST MEAL
It is with great joy that we proclaim that our newest Magnificat chapter had its first meal on March 25, 2012. Bernadette Patrick, our CST Advisor and Regional Representative from Trinidad, gave her witness. Bernadette's testimony was touching and filled many people with hope of their loved ones coming back to the Church.
There were about 175 guests present at the meal. They felt a special anointing and also that God is doing something new in Aruba.
The Coordinator, Cordilia Fun Jagershoek, and her Service Team have been very diligent in their preparation and formation. They are a very Charismatic team and have even given a Life in the Spirit Seminar on the island. The Bishop of the Diocese of Willemstad, Luis Antonio Secco, said, "I hope that this spirituality, inspired by the visit of Mother Mary to Elizabeth, will transform the daughters of our Holy Church to be instruments of the Holy Spirit and reach out to one another to share the love of God that they have received. The Constitution of the Magnificat Ministry has already been translated into the dialect of Papiamento." He gave his blessing on the ministry and is very grateful for Magnificat for coming to his diocese.
Congratulations! We wish we could have been there to join in the celebration and give each of you a holy hug!

MAGNIFICAT GRACE
Metairie Chapter Report "Vocation to Priesthood"
by Lisanne Dussouy
Recently at the Magnificat Metairie breakfast, Charles Dussouy, 28, a 2nd year theology seminarian studying at the Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, shared his grace filled journey to answering his call to the priesthood. He began his heartfelt testimony with a special tribute to his family, saying "They are the foundation of my faith and I love my family."
His grandparents, June and Paul Perret encouraged him to attend Steubenville retreats and while there he experienced an incredible peace during the procession of the Eucharist. "I knew I belonged there at that moment in time. I knew the love of God for the first time. It set me on fire for God."
He shared challenges and humorous tales of being mischievous, saying he experienced "retreat highs" but found it difficult to keep that flame burning for God on a daily basis.
He spoke of his devotion to Mary, his steadfast heavenly Mother, and the many amazing people God has put in his path, including his teachers at Archbishop Rummel High School: Corey Haas, who taught him that being "cool" and loving the Lord are the same thing and Brian Butler, whom during his senior retreat planted the seed in his head about becoming a priest. His parents, three brothers, late grandparents Rosemary and John Dussouy, Rev. Father Neil McDermott, Father Cupucci, friends and family all inspired and encouraged him along his spiritual journey.
Charles challenged the attendees during the season of Lent, saying "Reflect on the people who have brought you to this place, the good and the bad, the people that have graced you and hurt you. God doesn't leave us alone. God's providence is constantly working through people in your life."
He reflected on a pivotal moment in his life when the Lord spoke to him in prayer during a time in college that he felt alone and lost. With unquestioned faith he said, "I heard God say to me: The reason you are in darkness is because you are running away from Me. You're running away from the priesthood because you think I'm not enough for you." In that moment he realized that everything he ever desired was Him, the Lord.
He reminisced about a note he received from his father, Roy Dussouy Sr., that helped him accept unconditional love, saying "My Father loves me, basically, because I'm his son."
By the grace of God, Charles Dussouy will be ordained into the priesthood in 2 years, at the age of 30.
