THE CST WELCOMES THREE NEW MEMBERS
by Paulette Renaudin

Beginning with the Advisory Team Meeting in 2010, the Holy Spirit has been opening exciting new doors and windows for the Magnificat Ministry. Looking back, we see how prophetic that week of meetings was when the idea of creating CST Ministries was developed. The Ministries have brought forth anointed talent in many different areas to be used for God's glory, in facilitating the needed growth of our ministry. The Blessed Mother has shown us an excellent plan and we are in the beginning stages of developing and implementing it.

We would like to introduce to you our new CST Members who meet with us weekly by Webex, a teleconferencing service. This new technology allows them to participate in the meetings from the comfort of their homes.  When Pope Benedict XVI said, "we need to set sail fearlessly on the digital sea", we think Magnificat obeyed his command with much excitement!

Diane Bates
Diane Bates

Diane Bates was a member of the founding team of the Grapevine, TX Chapter of Magnificat, and serves as South Central Regional Rep for Magnificat and as Chairperson for the new CST Finance Ministry. She has a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry and worked in Research at Abbott Laboratories before coming to serve the Lord. She has served as a Diocesan Leader in the Schoenstatt Marian Apostolic Movement in the Church and currently leads the prayer group in her parish.

Kathleen Beckman
Kathleen Beckman

Kathleen Beckman presently serves as Western Regional Rep. for Magnificat, Coordinator of the Orange County, CA Chapter, and as Chairperson for the new CST Leadership Ministry. She is a prolific Catholic author, inspirational speaker, retreat leader and facilitator of St. Ignatius Exercises.

Donna Ross
Donna Ross

Donna Ross is founding Coordinator of the Palm Desert, CA Chapter of Magnificat, and serves on the CST Advisory Team. She is Chairperson for the new CST Communications Ministry. Donna also narrates our "Magnificat Proclaims" testimonies for EWTN. Donna comes to us from the Magic Kingdom of Disney to serve the Eternal Kingdom of God!

The CST could not be more delighted in welcoming these bright, warm and insightful women, led by the Holy Spirit, who reflect Our Lady in their roles as Magnificat women, and truly proclaim the greatness of the Lord!

"... And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manager."   (Luke 2:12)

He had been on the road for a little over an hour when something started to happen to his little Mazda car. The lights kept getting dimmer and dimmer. Suddenly they went out and the car stopped. All attempts to start it again failed. He still had a long drive ahead of him. It was the evening of Christmas day and he had not seen a car or a human being since he left Dublin. His old aunt had died the day before and was to be buried the next day. Her nephew, the priest, would celebrate her funeral Mass.

He was stranded on the side of the road at nine o'clock on Christmas night. By the light of the Christmas moon he saw a cottage on the far side of the road directly across from where he was parked. There was a light burning in the window. This was long before the age of the cell phone, so he decided to ask the people in the house for the use of their phone. He went through a little white wooden gate, up the path, and knocked on the door. After a moment, a young man with a beard opened the door. Looking past him into the house, the priest saw a young woman with a baby in her arms. She was holding the baby close to her cheek. She smiled at the priest who was telling the man what had happened. He asked if they had a phone. The man replied very gently, "No we don't have a phone, but if you walk back to the town there is a man with a bicycle shop. He will let you use his phone. You can't miss the house it is next to the supermarket. He will not mind if you wait there until someone comes to pick you up." The priest thanked the couple and wished them a Happy Christmas. "Will the car be alright there he asked the man?" "Oh yes, I'll see to that", he replied. On that bright moonlit night the priest walked back to town to look for the bicycle shop. He was distracted by his encounter with the couple and their baby, and by the strange aroma in the house. It was not an Irish smell. For some reason it reminded him of his recent visit to the Holy Land and why was the house only lit by candles?

The owner of the bicycle shop opened the door, and the priest told him about his predicament and what happened to his car. "Would you mind if I used your phone to call my nephew to come and pick me up?" he asked. The nephew promised he would be there within the hour. The bicycle-man's wife offered him tea and Christmas cake which he gladly accepted. She talked about the weather and how Christmas was so quiet this year, and how the price of everything seemed to be increasing all the time. She told him how their daughter phoned them from Australia, and how she had spent part of Christmas day at the beach. There were many families around here that had someone out foreign (overseas). "Sure Father, you must be exhausted after all your preparations 'for the Christmas'." The priest sighed in agreement. The woman talked while her husband peacefully smoked his pipe enjoying the warmth of the turf fire on his feet.

Fr. Kevin ArticleThe nephew arrived within the hour. They said goodbye to the bicycle-man and his wife, and wished them a Happy Christmas once more. They stopped at the priest's stricken vehicle to discover that the fan belt was missing. They would return to take the car the next day.

When the funeral was over, they went with a local mechanic to fetch the car. Having had the repair work done, the priest turned to pay a visit to the young family across the road. As he headed for the little white gate, he could not find it. There was only the hedge row, and beyond it an open field. There was no house in sight.

On the return journey the nephew spoke incessantly. The priest never uttered a word. It was the Feast of the Holy Family.

Yours Sincerely in Jesus Christ,

Fr. Kevin

OUR LADY OF THE LAKES HOSTS SPIRIT-FILLED
"BREAKFAST WITH THE BISHOP"
by Rosemary Ellis

Our Lady of the Lakes chapter is located in northern Minnesota in the Diocese of Duluth  Approximately two years ago, our new bishop, Most Reverend Paul Sirba, was installed.  He graciously accepted our invitation to speak to our Magnificat and to share his testimony with us.

We began the morning with prayer, as we always do.  One of our team, Lorri Henning, was given a very special vision early in the morning which she shared with us during prayer.  It inspired all of us and  we  felt that it needed to be shared .  Lorri told us that years ago, she was a big fan of Elvis Presley.  Elvis had a hit record titled "Puppet on a Holy Spirit String."  The night before our Magnificat breakfast, Lorri was dreaming and heard the words to the song.  When she awakened, she saw a white dove, which she knew was the Holy Spirit, hovering above our service team who appeared as puppets.  The dove had control of the strings on the puppets.  On her way to the Magnificat breakfast, Lorri turned on her radio and to her surprise, Elvis' "Puppet on a String" was playing!  Rosemary Ellis, our Regional Rep, asked to hear the words of the song.  All of us were amazed when Cathy Behrens, our music ministry leader, found them for us.  A portion of them follows:

"I become a puppet on a string.  You can do most anything to me.  All you do is touch my hand and your wish is my command.  I become a puppet on a string.  ...

Take my heart and please be fair. Handle it with loving care, for I'm just a puppet on a  string. You can do most anything to me."

We all felt that this was a special loving word from our beloved Holy Spirit reminding us to always yield to Him.

After prayer, we went into the dining room which was beautifully decorated and  were greeted by the glorious and anointed music of Cathy, her daughter and members of the Sacred Heart choir.  The room was filled with people, many attending Magnificat for the first time.  Betty Garoutte, our coordinator, introduced  Bishop Paul Sirba with a Scripture saying that God had given us a shepherd after His own heart.  We soon came to know the truth of the Scripture she had chosen.

Bishop Sirba, began by telling us the importance of our prayers and intercession for him as he shared that the week prior to the Magnificat, he had been walking near his home and encountered a large black bear!  He fled to a neighbor's house.  The neighbor informed

Minnesota Service Team 1

Darryle Carlson, Fr. George Zeck, Lorri Henning, Betty Garoutte, Bishop Paul Sirba, Rosemary Ellis, Jean Bauerly, Mary Rients

Bishop Sirba that the bear lives in the neighborhood and that she, too, had encountered it.

Bishop Sirba's testimony and teaching was rooted in Christ, animated by the Holy Spirit, based on the teaching of the Church and the sacraments.  He spoke of the Eucharist and the presence of the fullness of God at each Mass.  He grieved over how many in the body of believers do not believe in the Real Presence.

Bishop Sirba, whose motto is "fiat voluntas tua" or Thy will be done, shared about his call to the priesthood.  He also spoke about the call he received to become bishop of the Duluth diocese.  When he received the call from the Vatican, he asked the caller if he had the correct Father Sirba because his older brother is also a priest in the Duluth diocese.  The caller assured him that they had the correct brother.   Bishop Sirba said that from the beginning of his episcopate, he felt the grace of the Holy Spirit guiding him and that the prayers and support of his people sustain and strengthen him.  He emphasized that he was not operating on his own strength, but that it was the Body of Christ working together which makes his ministry possible.

Upon completion of his testimony, Rosemary Ellis shared a Scripture from Zechariah 3:5 regarding Joshua's investiture as high priest..  "Take off his dirty clothes and clothe him in the splendid robes of state, and put a clean turban on his head.  They clothed him in splendid robes of state and put a clean turban on his head.  The angel of  the Lord was standing there and said to him, "Look, I have taken away your iniquity from you.  The angel of the Lord then proclaimed to Joshua, 'The Lord Sabaoth says this:  "If you walk in my ways and keep my ordinances,  you shall govern my house, you shall watch over my courts, and I will give you free access among those who stand here."

We had prayed for months that the Holy Spirit would anoint our music and ministry and that His gifts would be truly present.   The day was filled with many gifts which gave glory to God through the Word, music, prayer, witnessing, and fellowship.

December 22 Second Reading

From a commentary on Luke

by Venerable Bede, priest

The Magnificat

Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

The Lord has exalted me by a gift so great, so unheard of, that language is useless to describe it, and the depths of love in my heart can scarcely grasp it. I offer then all the powers of my soul in praise and thanksgiving. As I contemplate His greatness, which knows no limits, I joyfully surrender my whole life, my senses, my judgment, for my spirit rejoices in the eternal Godhead of that Jesus, that Savior, whom I have conceived in this world of time.

The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.

Mary looks back to the beginning of her song, where she said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. Only that soul for whom the Lord in His love does great things can proclaim His greatness with fitting praise and encourage those who share her desire and purpose, saying: Join with me in proclaiming the greatness of the Lord; let us extol His name together.

Those who know the Lord, yet refuse to proclaim His greatness and sanctify His name to the limit of their power, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. His name is called holy because in the sublimity of His unique power He surpasses every creature and is far removed from all that He has made.

botticelli magnificat
Botticelli Magnificat, 1481

He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered His promise of mercy.

In a beautiful phrase Mary calls Israel the servant of the Lord. The Lord came to his aid to save him. Israel is an obedient and humble servant, in the words of Hosea: Israel was a servant, and I loved him.

Those who refuse to be humble cannot be saved. They cannot say with the prophet: See, God comes to my aid; the Lord is the helper of my soul. But anyone who makes himself humble like a little child is greater in the kingdom of heaven.

The promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.

This does not refer to the physical descendants of Abraham, but to his spiritual children. These are his descendants, sprung not from the flesh only, but who, whether circumcised or not, have followed him in faith. Circumcised as he was, Abraham believed, and this was credited to him as an act of righteousness.

The coming of the Savior was promised to Abraham and to his descendants forever. These are the children of the promise, to whom it is said:If you belong to Christ, then you are descendants of Abraham, heirs in accordance with the promise.

In each Newsletter, the CST includes a selection from the Liturgy of the Hours which is the public prayer of the Church.  It is our hope that you have enjoyed the readings and they enhance your own personal prayer. If you would like more information, visit www.divineoffice.org

MAGNIFICAT CST FEATURED MINISTRY: COMMUNICATIONS

By Donna Ross, Communications Chair

In real estate, it has been said the most important thing is location, location, location!  Likewise, in relationships, it seems one of the most important items is communication, communication, communication. Therefore, it is the hope of the CST Communications Ministry that while utilizing the various means of communication available to us, all might come into a closer relationship with Our Lord and Savior! Considering the Church exists to evangelize, we want to effectively share the good news of Jesus Christ and provide every opportunity for this beautiful Magnificat ministry to touch the hearts of many.

The CST Communications Ministry was introduced in the first e-Newsletter on October 7, 2010, Feast of the Holy Rosary and the 29th Anniversary of Magnificat. The title of that first article was Be Not Afraid, I Go Before You Always! One year later, we realize how prophetic that was as we have successfully embarked into new territories with no limitations in sight.

Communication Team
L-R Donna Ross, Kathy MacInnis, Carolyn Wright, Teri Thompson

The Lord has definitely gone before us to prepare the way including gathering dedicated & talented women for His purpose. Those on the core team are Donna Ross (Ministry Coordinator, new  CST member and Coordinator, Palm Desert, CA), Carolyn Wright, (SE Reg Rep Team Member, webmaster of the Magnificat CST website & Owner of CA Websolutions), Teri Thompson (Coordinator, West San Fernando Valley, CA, Marketing Communications professional and author of new technology and social networking platforms) and Jeanne Greenfield (retired technology educator, owner of JGProDev specializing in Website Design and Tech Training) and Kathy MacInnis (CST Communications Liaison,  CST Chapter Formation Director, and Assistant Coordinator of CST).

Jeanne Greenfield
Jeanne Greenfield

This ministry was established to address the challenging and ever changing world of communications and how that pertains to Magnificat.  This encompasses everything from the written word, to the Web site, Teleconferencing, Standardized E-mail materials, Radio and Television and other electronic digital platforms (i.e. YouTube, Podcasts, etc.). All of these are exciting but can also be overwhelming if we don't walk in trust.  Recognizing the diversity of our membership, some people are excited about the new technology while others may feel hesitant or uncomfortable to step into these new areas ... and that's OK!  Remember - many of the new options are just that ... options. As we introduce new features, each chapter will need to evaluate what works best for your team and membership.

Thank you for the positive feedback we have received regarding the e-Newsletter.  Due to your suggestions, we introduced in the August issue a new and improved printer friendly layout. If you missed an issue or want to go back to a previous one, the first e-Newsletter and all subsequent issues are located in the Newsletter section on the Web site.

In August 2010, our previous Web site had 25 visitors. Since the redesign, in the month of July 2011, we registered over 65,000 hits representing over 25 countries. Praise God! For 30 years the Lord prepared for His public ministry and Magnificat in many ways has been preparing these past 30 years to be more public, as well. It seems Our Lord and Our Lady want the fragrance from Mary's Garden to reach far and wide and the Web site is certainly helping that to happen.

Under the banner of Magnificat Proclaims, the Lord is opening doors to bring the Good News to millions of women using our collection of Magnificat testimonies through other communication platforms such as the "Magnificat Proclaims" Radio, and a potential TV and Book Series. The radio series can be heard through EWTN Radio (some Sundays at 10 am &10 pm EST).  You can also log onto http://saintjosephradio.net/magnificat.html to purchase testimonies.  Last summer, a TV pilot was produced for a possible series which will feature Magnificat speakers sharing their testimonies in a relaxed casual interview setting. Our first book featuring a collection of Magnificat testimonies is in development. In all of our endeavors, we rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance and perfect timing!

The spirituality of Magnificat is based on the Visitation scene in Luke 1: 46-55.  We know that Mary wanted to be present to her cousin Elizabeth and traveled to be with her. In order for us to be present to our sisters and effectively communicate with them, we too will need to travel to where they are at on their journey.

If the Lord is touching your heart to be on our ministry team, then we invite you to email the Central Office at MagnificatCST@aol.com

Visitation to Dublin, Ireland with
Fr. Kevin and Sr. Briege
by Kathleen Beckman

Fr. Scallon Sr. Briege
Fr. Scallon and Sr. Briege

I was humbled when Fr. Kevin Scallon, C.M., invited me to speak at the Intercession for Priests Retreat led by "himself" and Sr. Briege McKenna for the month of August at beautiful All Hallows College Seminary in Dublin, Ireland.  As the airplane flew over the picturesque landscape of Ireland I marveled at the beautiful lush green countryside.  The Lord gave me a prophetic insight: that the Emerald Isle was important to His plan for the Church.  He revealed an emerald that was buried in mud presently, but not permanently. God wants to rescue the Emerald Isle, restore the Irish Catholic Church.

Church in Ireland
All Hallows Church

At Dublin airport I immediately recognized the Magnificat logo displayed in the hand of Mary, one of the service team members on the Queen of Ireland Chapter in Formation. I felt welcomed by her warm Irish Marian spirit. On the drive to All Hallows Mary told me about Dublin's newly formed Service Team; the bishop's letter that recently gave permission to move Magnificat forward. Upon arrival at historic All Hallows College, I was greeted by Fr. Kevin who welcomed me in his usual joyful manner befitting a spiritual father for one of his Magnificat daughters.  He oriented me to the retreat program that includes communal morning and evening prayer, Adoration, Holy Mass, sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick, intercessory prayer for repentance, healing, renewal of the priesthood, and for the Church.

That afternoon, I had the privilege of observing Fr. Kevin and Sr. Briege ministering to the great number of priests in the chapel.  I was edified by their solicitous zeal for each individual priest. I saw Christ move in and through the ministry of Fr. Kevin, Sr. Briege, Fr. Barry Horan, and Fr. Jack Finnegan. I was reminded of Luke's gospel: "Simon, Simon, behold Satan desired to have you that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren" (Lk 22:31-32).

I realized the Lord had given Fr. Kevin a prophetic mission thirty years ago when the Spirit inspired him to begin Intercession for Priests Retreats.  Father Kevin and Sr. Briege's ministry to priests is prophetic for a time such as this when priests suffer various scourges from within their ranks and from anti-cleric, secular governments.  Fr. Kevin quotes Lumen Gentium (par.41) in the program: "Rather than be held back by perils and hardships in their apostolic labors they should rise to greater holiness, nourishing and fostering their action with an overflowing contemplation, for the delight of the entire Church of God."

Dublin Service Team
 Dublin Service Team
L to R - Ethna Scallon, Mary Malloy, Mary Curran, Kathleen Beckman, Patricia Miller and Kathy Kelly

One of the highlights of my visit was the day I spent with the new Team: Ethna, Mary, Mary, Patricia and Kathy. Patricia Mitchell has been chosen to serve as the Coordinator and she is rich in leadership experience, and Marian spirituality.  The service team is gifted with humility and charity to serve in Our Lady's Magnificat garden. As we prayed together the Holy Spirit confirmed His plans to use Magnificat to bless the Church in Ireland.  I believe the Dublin Chapter will flourish like a tree planted near living water to provide shelter for Irish Catholic women in need of the profound and joyful experience of Mary and Elizabeth's visitation.

On Thursday nights' the prayer meeting is open to the public, and the Chapel is packed to capacity.  Fr. Kevin asked me to give a short version of my testimony there. The response to personal testimony is always powerful, as we know in Magnificat.  Most people remained for prayer ministry following.

On the Feast of The Queenship of Mary, it was my turn to speak to the priests. I touched on three points:  1) Priestly identification with Christ Crucified, 2) Scriptures on restoration after persecution, 3) Magnificat: Mary's visitation to the Church in Ireland.  I shared that Mary desired to accompany her priest sons in the intimacy of love that empowers priests to courageously, joyfully live their vocation to the fullest.

With all of my heart, I thank Fr. Kevin, Sr. Briege, Fr. Barry, Fr. Jack, the priests, the Twins (Gemma and Triona King), Patricia, Mary, Ethna, Kathy, Mary, for blessing me by your joyful example of consecration to God and His Church.

Allow me to close this brief recap with wisdom given us by Fr. Jack Finnegan: "Eucharist is always epiclesis. We should re-discover the courage of our convictions; speak of our faith in and out of season.  Eternal truths need to be eternally repeated. The Eucharist is wisdom endowing; liberty endowing and the basis of our witness, testimony, evangelization, catechesis, homiletics, and theology. At the heart of the Eucharist, you have the Mighty Healer, Jesus, shaper of lives."

Mary, Queen of Ireland and Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us. Amen.

JESUS' BIRTHDAY PRESENT

by Valli Leone, Assistant Coordinator - Miami, FL

What can I give Jesus, for all that He has given to me?

What gift would He like for His birthday, beneath the Christmas tree?

Would He like a box of chocolates, Godiva brand for sure?

Or the latest Nike running shoes, from the Sports Authority store?

What about an island cruise, where He could just relax?

Perhaps a new computer, to give Him all the facts.

No, Jesus doesn't want those things, for only one will do.

He wants your heart and mind and strength, your soul-yes, all of you.

He wants your love and all your pain; He wants your past, your sin.

He wants your sadness, all your shame, surrendered now to Him.

He wants your present and your future, secure in holiness;

He's here today and on His throne, to give you all His best.

Jesus Christ is coming back, to claim His holy Bride.

He's ready now to empty you of arrogance and pride.

He wants to see you dressed in white, in garments of pure praise.

He wants to see you full of joy, encouraged for your days.

His arms are open wide for you; so run, for you're His child.

Embrace Him as your All in All; He's Mercy, meek and mild.

Now, wrap yourself for Jesus, in Spirit, Truth and Song;

Then let the Holy Spirit stir forgiveness all life long.

Rejoice! For on His birthday, He gives a brand new start.

What does He want for Christmas? Nothing less than ALL your heart.

Merry Christmas and a Happy, Holy New Year!
