WWW.AFTERSCHOOLPGH.ORGSeptember 2012

Greetings!

Please join me in sending many thanks and best wishes to Alana Kulesa, the woman who has been the heart and mind behind the communications efforts for APOST since its inception.

As you may already be aware, 3 Rivers Connect (3RC) from which Alana was employed, closed its doors on August 31. Alana will be seeking other opportunities and we can only hope that she will stay connected to the OST community. Knowing Alana's commitment to the successful development of children and youth, she will continue to have an impact on the APOST community and beyond. It has been an honor and absolute BLAST working with Alana.  I'm proud to call her my esteemed colleague, and most importantly, my dear friend.  Alana can be reached at Alana.Kulesa@gmail.com.

Upcoming APOST Happenings

Spotlight on Positive Youth Development Breakfast 9/13

Time: 9:00 am - 10:30 am
Cost: Free, must RSVP
Location: The Zone - 5217 Butler St. Pittsburgh, PA 15201

The APOST Positive Youth Development Committee is hosting a bi-monthly series of forums to highlight the best practices of OST Providers using the positive youth development approach. Every other month (see dates below) the Spotlight on PYD forum will host two providers who have volunteered to demonstrate a positive youth development component which they successfully implement in their program. The presentations will be practical and replicable and bring to light the many unique and creative ways youth worker professionals are intentionally integrating the positive youth development approach. Do YOU implement the PYD approach in your organization? No doubt that you do so share your practices with your peers!

Here are some examples of PYD approach:

  • Young people learn by doing
  • Expression through music, drama, creative writing, public speaking
  • Expressing of ideas, concerns and opinions
  • Practicing of job related skills
  • Adults & young people work together to plan activities
  • Organization/group uses symbols (t-shirts, caps, slogans, chants, etc.) to build sense of group identity
  • Young people are encouraged to "give back to the larger community"
  • Leadership roles are provided
  • Teaching/modeling how to deal with anger, frustration, conflict
  • Exploring variety of life situations, view points and cultures

This workshop will familiarize program providers with the elements required for quality Out-of-School Time programming as well as the core competencies necessary for afterschool and youth development professionals. OST providers will have a thorough understanding of how to use the APOST Quality Self-Assessment to identify program weaknesses and obtain support where practices need to be strengthened. Upon completion of the Orientation, providers will have the knowledge needed to successfully complete the APOST Quality Self-Assessment with their organization, complete an Action Plan for ongoing improvement, and become official APOST Quality Campaign members! APOST Quality Campaign member benefits include use of APOST logo on all marketing materials, recognition of participation in continuous quality improvement efforts on www.afterschoolpgh.org, priority preference to special offerings, eligibility to APOST Quality Capacity Grants...and much more!
