Lights On Afterschool

On October 18, 2011, APOST participated in "Afterschool Advocacy Day" at our state's capitol. 40 supporters, including parents, grandparents, youth and program providers boarded the bus at 6:00 AM to travel to Harrisburg and meet with policymakers. In addition to individual visits, a rally with over 100 afterschool supporters from around the state was held in the Rotunda. The message was loud, clear and unified: Afterschool programs inspire learning, keep kids safe and help working families!  Click here to see some great photos!

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 was proclaimed Lights On Afterschool Day by the Pittsburgh City Council. Representatives from the Allegheny Partners for Out of School Time (APOST) accepted the proclamation from Councilman Bill Peduto on behalf of the afterschool community in recognition of the importance of these programs in helping working families, keeping kids safe, and inspiring learning

Later that day, hundreds of afterschool program participants and providers joined APOST for a celebration of Lights On Afterschool at the Carnegie Science Center. The culmination of this event was the interactive illumination of the Fred Rogers Memorial Statue. Mr. McFeely was on hand for a speedy delivery of trolley postcards from the children. The brilliant MGR Foundation team illuminated Mr. Rogers and rocked the North Shore with a remix of "Won't You Be My Neighbor".

HAVE AN EXPERTISE IN YOUTH LEADERSHIP? IF SO, APOST NEEDS YOU!

Join APOST as we create a simplistic set of ACTIONS (not to be confused with objectives or learning outcomes) youth will participate in when attending an out-of-school time program which identifies itself with a "youth leadership" focus. These best practices will offer
OST Providers a set of actionable criteria with which to determine their youth development focus area. In addition, the best practices will provide parents/school districts/community with a simplistic menu of actions that youth will participate in if attending a youth leadership focused OST program
