Point Park University Department of Education Seeks Partner Organizations

"Building Family Partnerships" is a course at Point Park University's School of Education that introduces future educators to strategies for developing and maintaining ongoing, meaningful relationships with family members.  Students will be able to explain how effective communication with families helps to improve classroom management, attendance, graduation rates, social and emotional development, and achievement.  They learn the importance of involving parents in decisions regarding their children's progress, with special emphasis placed on developing cross-cultural competency skills in communicating with students and families representing diverse economic, linguistic, academic, and cultural backgrounds.

Two observations are required for this course.  The first is simply a hands-off, non-participant observation to note how a school or community organization engages the parents of their students in its functions, and speak with a staff member who is knowledgeable about the parent population.  The second observation is to occur at the same type of event at the same location, though this one is a more hands-on field experience.  Students are to facilitate the event in some form, be it setting up, distributing materials, contributing to the discussion, or some other task the school or organization sees fit. In the past, students have worked with Pittsburgh Public Schools, Fox Chapel Area High School, The East End Cooperative Ministry, and The Homewood YWCA, amongst other organizations both in the education and community realms.

For more information about participating as a partner, please contact Mark Mangini at mamangi@PointPark.EDU.

Volunteer Opportunity for High School Students

If you are currently in the 9th - 12th grade and enjoy working with children, then The YouthALIVE! VolunTEEN Program at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh is the place for you.  The program is comprised of approximately 20 high school students from throughout the Pittsburgh area.  Each of these positions requires an application and two principal and/or teacher referrals.  Chosen applicants will commit to work at least six hours per week in the Museum.  This work will primarily be as a part of the Museum's Floor Staff Team, though there are possibilities for students to work at outreach festivals or in other areas of the Museum.  If you're interested, please fill out the application and referral forms,  mail or fax to the indicated address, and plan to attend an orientation on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 5:00-6:30pm at The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh - 10 Children's Way - Pittsburgh, PA 15212.  A parent or guardian must accompany TEEN for this orientation.
