Explorer Enrollment Information Night

Thursday, January 12th, 6:30pm

Lake Washington School District parents are invited to Explorer Community School's Enrollment Information Night - Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 6:30pm at the Emily Dickinson school Commons.
Explorer is a Lake Washington School District choice elementary school located on the Dickinson campus. One of three choice elementary school programs in the Lake Washington School District, Explorer offers a small elementary school environment staffed by three certified teachers in multi-aged classrooms grades one through five. Explorer's curriculum promotes academic excellence, strong self esteem, a love of learning and a belief in the importance of community. Parent volunteers are vital to the school's success in meeting these goals and a high level of parental involvement is required.
Attendance at this evening information night is a requirement for all families who wish to enroll a child for the 2012/2013 school year. Additionally, attendance is required to maintain a child's spot on the waitlist. Failure to attend will result in your child's name being removed from the waitlist. We are unable to offer childcare; therefore this is an adult only evening. Details regarding Explorer enrollment can be found at http://www.lwsd.org/school/explorer/About-Us/Pages/Explorer-Enrollment.aspx or call (425) 936-2533.

Library News
The Global Reading Challenge Battle will be Monday, January 30 in the library from 11:30-12:15. This battle is organized and administered by a King County Library librarian. Our 7 teams of 4th and 5th graders have been busily reading for the battles.  The winning team from our school will battle against others in our district and then a winner from those battles will go against others in King County. There will be no library lunch recess on January 30th. Parents may come, but seating at all 7 tables will be limited to participants.  Audience will be standing room only.
The "in-school" Battle of the Books battles for our five 6th grade teams will begin on Tuesday, February 7, during lunch recess, from 11-12:30. This is a double elimination process so two teams will battle for 30 minutes; we should get three battles in on that Tuesday. The battles will continue February 8 and go as many days as needed (during lunch) until we have one team to battle at the district level. The District level battles begin February 27th. As there are only two teams battling at a time, parents are welcome to join us and cheer for their teams! There will be no library lunch recess during these battles.
Speaking of library lunch recess (LLR)... I am so pleased that students are enjoying this option. Our parent volunteers are doing a great job. Regularly scheduled are Paula Keddie, Laura Cannistra, Jennifer Rojas (LLR Volunteer Coordinator), Traci Tuttle, Karen Postelnick, Susan Seabrook, Marcia Stann, Kristin Hart, Erin McDaniel, Lisa Salmi, Heather Clark, Al and Marcia Johnson, as well as some wonderful substitutes. We would love to have more volunteers join us!
I would also like to belatedly thank all of the wonderful volunteers who worked with our Book Fair Chairman, Becki Culbert, for a wonderful book fair. This event is a huge benefit for the library. Thank you to all of you who made purchases!  I would like to thank the following parent volunteers: Susan Seabrooks, Nikki Edward, Antoinette Huss, Kristin Vogele, Maureen Wrast, Danielle Lund, Glenda Wood, Lynnly Nealon, Kristin Raffensperger, Kelly Barrysmith, Tanya Westby, Whitney Sabin, Cindy Deffe, Christian Culbert, Dawn Kreysar, Glenda Wood, Lori Wile, Marti O'Loughlin, Cathy Bibby and Amy McElfresh.
Also, thank you to our sixth grade volunteers who helped set up and take down the fair: Cameron Edward, Yvette Onychuk, Jackson Roos, Luke Gibbons, Ryan Hix, Logan Hix, Samantha Wile, Alex Wallace, and Isaac Perrin.
We have really wonderful volunteers at Dickinson/Explorer, thank you!

Open House to Meet LWSD Superintendent Candidate
January 10th, 6:30pm
The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) and City of Redmond will host an opportunity for the public to meet and talk with Dr. Traci Pierce, the LWSD Board of Director's preferred candidate for its next District Superintendent. The community is invited to this informal open house on Tuesday, January 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the Bytes Café, first floor, Redmond City Hall, 15670 NE 85th Street. Dr. Pierce will say a few words to those gathered at 6:45 pm. Light refreshments will be served. The LWSD School Board conducted an internal search for its new Superintendent in October and November and announced Dr. Traci Pierce as their preferred candidate at the December 5 board meeting. Dr. Pierce will replace Dr. Chip Kimball, who is leaving to take a school superintendent position in Singapore. The board decided to look for a qualified internal candidate because continuity and a smooth transition will be necessary due to the many major district initiatives culminating next year.
Dr. Pierce is currently the deputy superintendent of instructional services for LWSD and has not yet been hired as Superintendent. The series of gatherings throughout the district to meet Dr. Pierce will introduce her to the community while asking for public input to the school board.
For more information on the open house, contact Talley Hudson at 425-556-2101 or thudson@redmond.gov. To learn more about the potential superintendent or the search process, contact Kathryn Reith at 425-936-1342 or kreith@lwsd.org.

Finding Kind - Documentary on Bullying
Finding Kind has received national recognition as a movement in raising awareness of girl bullying and meanness (name-calling, threats, power struggles, competition, manipulation, secrets, rumors, excluding and fighting). A free viewing will be offered to 5th/6th grade girls on Thursday, January 26th from 6:30-8:30pm in the Samantha Smith Gym. To learn more about Finding Kind and the Kind Campaign, go to www.kindcampaign.com. Any parent is welcome to view the documentary. However, due to the content, viewing is not suggested for girls under the age of 10. Students also need to be accompanied by an adult. There will be a discussion after the screening. If you have questions, feel free to email millingworth@lwsd.org.
