Principal Post

Please help me extend a warm welcome to our newest Dickinson teacher, Brittney Geleynse. Mrs. Geleynse has been hired to join the Special Education Resource Team, as well as support our large 3rd grade classes. Mrs. Geleynse completed her education at Boise State and has worked with children in a variety of roles, most recently in the Bellevue School District. I'm always pleased to be able to steal someone from Bellevue to join our work in 'the 414!' We have assigned her to working with 3rd and 4th grade students with resource support, and the 3rd grade team has asked her to focus on assisting them with reducing class sizes during the important work they are doing in literacy. Mrs. G is settling into her new home in C Pod with the 3rd grade classrooms, and is quickly learning the ways of the world at Dickinson.
I hope that you all are able to take time during the upcoming break to focus on spending quality time together as a family. Adults and children alike need time to decompress, de-stress, and focus on what is most important in our lives: spending time with family. After the frantic pace of starting out the school year, I too am looking forward to focusing on my children and settling into our new home. I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year, and I am confident that 2012 is going to be a great one!
Warm Wishes, Karen Barker |

Middle School Transition News
Over the past several months, Evergreen Junior High has coordinated PTSA workgroup meetings consisting of both junior high and elementary representatives to focus on the middle school transition. Dickinson's representative on this work group is Andrea Stoppani, and Explorer's representative is Alisoune Lee. The Junior High staff has also attended PTSA meetings at each of the feeder elementary schools and has met with the Front Office staff from each elementary school to find out what processes are similar and what will be new for the incoming families. In January, registration for middle school will kick off. For parents, an important step is to review the school choices to determine the best fit for your child. LWSD has a rich offering of middle school alternatives that are described here: The Choice schools hold their mandatory information meetings in January.
The following Evergreen transition activities will take place in January: January 23rd - Middle school registration will be kicked off at Dickinson by a visit from the Evergreen middle school counselors. Counselors Barbara Gregory and Dawn Riley will meet with the 5th and then 6th grade classes and present information about elective classes. January 24th - A Coffee Chat for Dickinson parents will be held from 10 to 11 am. Jan Olson, principal, and Anne Balicki, assistant principal, will host an informational meeting in the Evergreen Junior High library. Middle School information will be presented, and there will be time for questions. Two Parents' Nights will be held in January as well. These are for parents and guardians only. Meetings will begin in the EJH Fieldhouse. Parking is available at EJH and the Dickinson Elementary campus. Carpooling is encouraged. The dates of these meetings are as follows: January 24th 6:45 pm for parents of 5th graders January 31st 6:45 pm for parents of 6th graders On each evening prior to the general meeting, parents of Special Education students are invited to an informational meeting with Evergreen Special Education staff. The meeting will start at 6pm in room 124. |

Explorer Enrollment Information Night
Thursday, January 12th, 6:30pm
Lake Washington School District parents are invited to Explorer Community School's Enrollment Information Night - Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 6:30pm at the Emily Dickinson school commons - 7040 208th Ave. NE Redmond, WA. Explorer is a Lake Washington School District choice elementary school located on the Emily Dickinson campus. One of three choice elementary school programs in the Lake Washington School District, Explorer offers a small elementary school environment staffed by three certified teachers in multi-aged classrooms grades one through five. Explorer's curriculum promotes academic excellence, strong self esteem, a love of learning and a belief in the importance of community. Parent volunteers are vital to the school's success in meeting these goals and a high level of parental involvement is required. Attendance at this evening information night is a requirement for all families who wish to enroll a child for the 2012/2013 school year. Additionally, attendance is required to maintain a child's spot on the waitlist. Failure to attend will result in your child's name being removed from the waitlist. We are unable to offer childcare; therefore this is an adult only evening. Details regarding Explorer enrollment can be found at http://www.lwsd.org/school/explorer/About-Us/Pages/Explorer-Enrollment.aspx or call (425) 936-2533. |

Save those Books (and Games and Movies...) Has the spring cleaning bug got you early? Clearing out space for those incoming Christmas gifts? Don't give them away yet! The 2nd Annual Used Book Fair is scheduled for March 12-15, 2012. We need your books (children's and "grown-ups"), games and movies (G, PG only please). Please be sure to put them aside in a box or two, and clearly mark them 'For the Used Book Fair.' We'll get back to you in February to let you know where and when to bring them in. Sorry, we don't have the space to store them in the interim. And thanks for thinking of us! Any questions? Contact Susan Seabrooks at sseabrooks@dickinsonptsa.org. |
