Principal Post

Dear Dickinson & Explorer Families,

This week our community came together for two special events. On Tuesday our school was a recipient of a special visit from the Seattle Seahawks. We spent the morning together in celebration of a fantastic start to the year and benefitting from the message the Seahawks delegation brought to our school about healthy eating habits, daily exercise, working hard in school, and treating one another with kindness to prevent bullying. We ended the morning by watching the 5th and 6th grade students play games with the players on a beautiful sunny day. I was full of pride in our school, and the Seahawks felt that it was their most successful school visit of the year!

Thursday our learning community worked together to produce a phenomenal assembly in celebration of Veterans Day. This was yet another example of how the Dickinson/Explorer Team works together. A number of teachers worked to create a meaningful celebration of the freedoms that are afforded to us by the service of those in uniform. Students participated throughout, from our opening performance by Mrs. Moore's class signing the pledge of allegiance, to the beautiful musical performances, to the swearing in of our new ASB representatives and leaders. The final video celebrating the men and women that are dear to our school family brought home the message of pride in service to the students.

Both of these school events could not have been possible without the wonderful teamwork of our school staff. We have the hardest working adults in education today serving our students. I am incredibly grateful for their work, and know that we have a great future still ahead of us. In a month during which we focus on what we are thankful for, my school family is among the top of my list.

Turkey Trot this Tuesday
Tuesday, November 15th, 3:45-4:30pm
Come and cheer on the Cross Country running club at their first ever Turkey Trot! It will be held on November 15th at 3:45-4:30pm on the Emily Dickinson campus. They will be running a mile!

Seahawks Vist
Dickinson and Explorer were thrilled to host two of our local Seahawks football players last week. The visit was a thrill for the children and the players passed on some important life lessons.
See the great article in the Redmond Reporter and be sure to watch the video (you may see some familiar faces!).

Chairperson Needed for Beautification

Are you a gardener who cringes at the sight of our school's flower beds? Do you have an interest in helping kids learn about gardening and watching them take pride in their work and school?

The Beautification Committee needs a chairperson to help coordinate activities with individual classrooms and the fall and spring community work parties. We have teachers, school clubs and classrooms eager to get started. And, even better, we have an experienced chairperson from the last few years who wants to guide you every step of the way. This is a great volunteer opportunity for 1 or 2 people. Please email Lisa at ltraynor@dickinsonptsa.org

Common Core Standards Survey

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) would like to invite you to participate in a survey to gather input. Complete the Online Survey that is available through November 23rd.
Please feel free to contact the OSPI Teaching and Learning office if you have any questions about these opportunities.

Scholarship Basket Auction

Thursday, December 1st, 9:30am

Lake Washington PTSA Council cordially invites you to our Annual Scholarship Basket Auction, December 1st, 9:30am*, at the LWSD Resource Center Lobby. Enter to win one of several great raffle prizes! All proceeds provide scholarships to graduating seniors and staff in our district.

* Silent bidding begins November 3rd, 2011

Scholarships for students and teachers are possible thanks to your generosity. Each year, the PTSA Council awards a variety of scholarships to graduating seniors and to LWSD certificated staff. Funding for these scholarships is provided by the generosity of all PTAs in the district, the continued support and success of Council's Annual Scholarship Basket Auction and donations from the greater community.
Student scholarships, recognizing achievement and community service, assist recipients in their post-secondary education.  Scholarships for certificated LWSD staff provide assistance with continuing education at an institute of higher learning, through LWSD Professional Development, or for pursuing National Board Certification.
