Foundation Recognizes Greenville County Women's Committee volunteers

The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture recognizes South Carolina's Greenville County Women's Committee for extending agricultural education to non-farm communities! The committee planned an educational experience centered around farm life for elementary students of urban and rural schools.

During the event at Papa Bruce's Barnyard, students learned about feeding and caring for animals, milking cows, traditional and modern farm technology and the life of plants. The children enjoyed petting and feeding animals, "milking" a wooden cow, going on a hayride, planting a seed and learning about farm tools. The committee "hopes that these things may spark an interest in agriculture, if only a small garden in the backyard."

Upon returning to their classrooms, students drew pictures of what they saw and learned about science and social studies at Papa Bruce's Barnyard. They also wrote thank you notes to the women's committee.

Farm topics included bees

Recently the committee also sponsored a "Farm Day" in the city to show others what is seen on farms. They used South Carolina's "AG Simulator," a refurbished combine, in which children view a moving picture to see how crops are harvested. Children could also participate in a toy tractor race and pet small farm animals throughout the day.

Thank you note exampleCongratulations again to members of the Greenville County Women's Committee, who are Mary Appleton, Bennie Blakely, Sandy Cazel, Faye Cox, Anita Holcombe, Anna Holcombe, Jennifer Hughes, Sandra King, Judy Langley, Deborah Nicholson, Beth Reynolds and Anita Tam. The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture appreciates your efforts to share the story of agriculture with others!
