Michigan Farm Bureau Volunteer Recognized for Ag Literacy Work

The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture is recognizing Gloria Pennington of Barry County Farm Bureau in Michigan as an outstanding volunteer in promoting agricultural literacy.

Gloria helped organize the Taste of Barry County reception, a two-hour event at the Barry County Fair in July of last year.

Sharing the story of agriculture during the county fair is a long tradition, but Gloria took it a step further by inviting fair vendors - local farmers - to help educate the community about their locally grown food. Farmers were encouraged to explain and discuss their products as they served food, and attendees were encouraged to ask questions of each farmer.

Only local farmers were invited to attend the reception, giving them the opportunity to introduce and promote their own products to the community. Food samples - including milk, sweet corn, beef, turkey, cheese (including cow, goat and sheep's milk), fruit and vegetable dips, blueberries, stone-ground-flour pancakes, maple syrup, cookies and donuts - showed the area's agricultural diversity. The sweet corn was cooked by a steam engine, courtesy of the engine's owner.

Gloria worked hard to secure 14 vendors who served more than 300 fairgoers, raising over $900 for the Youth Fair Premium Fund.

"Gloria's efforts were what made the event a success," said Dan Durheim, AFBFA Executive Director. "She got several new and inactive members involved and excited about agriculture in Barry County and the county Farm Bureau. Gloria did a great job with the Taste event, promoting the importance of agriculture in Michigan and what great food products the county and state have to offer."

The Foundation thanks Gloria Pennington for promoting agriculture. Through its Volunteer Recognition Program, the Foundation is proud to promote agricultural literacy events such as Taste of Barry County.
