Simonton Cancer Center
Honoring O. Carl Simonton, M.D.
June 29, 1942- June 18, 2009
In this addition of our newsletter, the Simonton Cancer Center celebrates the birth and honors the passing of our founder, O. Carl Simonton M.D.
June was our "Simonton Says" month on facebook, where we posted quotes, studies and information. We have received feedback from those of you who are not connected to (nor wish to join) facebook and the articles provided in this newsletter are primarily a re-cap of that information for your benefit. We thank you all for your encouragement and comments to SCC.   We are listening!

Simonton Says.....

" We function as physical/mental/emotional/spiritual beings. All aspects of healing need to be addressed in the broad context of healing, with a different focus based on the particular needs and predispositions of each person, family, community and culture." O. Carl Simonton, M.D.

" In the face of uncertainty, there is nothing wrong with hope."

Researchers at Tokyo's Nippon Medical School have discovered quantifiable evidence of nature's healing properties. In their study, those who spent 2 to 4 hours in the woods on two consecutive days, experienced a nearly 50% increase in the activity of their natural cancer killer (NK) cell activity. Equally impressive is that this increased NK activity lasted for more than 7 days after their trip to the forest- for both men and women. The Japanese call this type of activity shrinrin-yoko, or "forest bathing."

  Pets and Improved Immune Function:
There is new evidence showing improved immune function in children who own pets. Recent research conducted by Dr. June McNicholas out of the University of Warwick in the U.K. has shown better attendance rates in elementary school with children in pet friendly homes than those without pets. In middle school,  absenteeism due to illness was 13-18% less with pet owning children than those with no pets. This amounts to nearly 3 additional weeks of school! Testing was conducted by examining differences in levels of salivary immunoglobulin A, due to ease of collection in this population and because it is regarded as an indicator of immune function. Research confirmed that these levels in pet owning children were more likely to be within normal ranges year round, vs non pet owning children, whose levels showed significantly more variability below and above normal range of function.
The presence of pets in the home appears to have a regulatory or stabilizing influence on immune functioning on children.
SCC believes this result directly correlates to other studies involving social support and improved immune function.
