VALPO CHAMBER "ENVISION THE FUTURE" EVENT GEARS UP FOR 2011
Since 1998, the Valpo Chamber has partnered with Porter County Middle Schools to provide over 1,000 8th grade students with an amazing educational experience called "Envision the Future."
Envision the Future is a simulation game in which students, projecting themselves to age 28, research and identify their career interests through their class curriculum, consider family size (marital status and number of children), and receive a mock checkbook with the monthly income entered for their specific career.
Students visit stations, manned by over 170 trained business volunteers, at which they pay their monthly bills. At each station, students make decisions concerning the standard of living they will assume. For example, at the housing station, students decide if they want to pay for a one-bedroom apartment or a three-bedroom house.
The program focuses on the monthly costs associated with rent/mortgage, utilities, taxes, insurance, childcare, and other living expenses such as food and clothing. The program also includes military information in the way of earnings and allowances if the student chooses the military as their future option.
The program also includes unexpected events such as unemployment, medical bills, and divorce. Students who go through these unexpected events must also visit an assistance station to seek counseling for legal, financial, or employment education issues.
The 2011 Envision the Future is a Chamber Coalition project between the Valpo, Kouts, and Hebron Chambers. The program is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15, at the Porter County Expo Center.
Special thanks to Presenting Sponsor Porter Health System, Contributing Sponsors Centier Bank, Frontier Communications, Teachers Credit Union, and In-Kind Donors: Porter County Fair & Expo Center and Wal-Mart.
For more information about the event or to volunteer, contact Kurt Gillins at (219) 462-1105.

HEART HEALTH EVENTS SUCCESSFUL ONCE AGAIN
On Monday, February 28, the Valpo Chamber celebrated heart health with two great events.
A record number of individuals showed up to give blood at the Chamber's 3rd Annual Blood Drive. In conjunction with the American Red Cross, the Blood Mobile set up shop right on Lincolnway from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Many business professionals and community members used this Prompt Ambulance Service, Inc.opportunity to give to the Red Cross and help them build the blood bank in the region.
While blood was being given on Lincolnway, was teaching individuals how to save lives with the American Heart Association CPR/AED Certification. Over 30 business professionals took part in this first-time event for the Valpo Chamber. Each participant went through a series of Prompt Ambulance Service, Inc.exercises and videos to learn the approved form of CPR and how to correctly use an AED.
VALPO CHAMBER BOARD ENDORSES CREATION OF NEW TAX INCREMENT FINANCING DISTRICT
The Valpo Chamber Board of Directors has taken a position supporting the creation of a new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District that will be used to create a new industrial site on Indiana 49 South.
This new TIF district will provide the necessary infrastructure for the development of a new shovel-ready industrial site for the proposed new North Coast Distributing, Inc. Headquarters and Distribution Facility.
Rex Richards, President of the Chamber states that "the shortage of shovel-ready sites has been viewed by the Chamber as a weakness in our efforts to recruit and retain companies in the greater Valparaiso area. The decision by North Coast to maintain their corporate headquarters and distribution facility in Valparaiso is a positive decision because this firm is one that most communities in America would love to have located in their community."
The Valpo Chamber Board endorsed the creation of this new Tax Increment Financing District at its February Board of Directors meeting. |
