BEADMAKING RUT - GET YOUR MOJO BACK!
Tracy A Brown
What do you do when you are stuck for ideas and feel that your Beadmaking just isn't going anywhere or evolving???  When you need a boost to get you to the next level???  When you seem to have lost your mojo???

Here's a few ideas to help get us back on the right track.

There are a whole range of things that we can do to get ourselves out of this situation or start our brains on a new path. Number 1. is to make sure you always have a visual diary or notebook handy. You never know when an idea might hit you and you need to jot it down. Keeping this on hand is great as you can always refer back to those "great ideas" that you had in the middle of the night when you couldn't sleep!!! Ha ha!!!

Some of the simplest things that I do are....go online and into the Beadmaking Forums....check out the Galleries and latest beads that people are making; jotting down things or ideas that I like, new tricks and techniques that I haven't tried but would like to. I also go through my "coffee table" bead books like 1000 Glass Beads or Masters or any of the other showcase books available, even the ones that have tutorials - try something new. Another good trick is to go to the big shopping centres if you have one near you, and take a look at the latest fashion colours/trends.  Sitting having a coffee and a mental or physical 'mini' holiday could be just the ticket for getting inspired. Take note of what people are wearing and ideas for using your beads in jewellery.

I will also work on making some very simple things with glass....frit beads or stringers, encased stringers and simple twisties and canes etc. A fun thing to do if you make your own jewellery as well is to make a range of spacer beads....great discipline and we always need spacers....I find that quite often when I am working making very simple things it gives my brain a bit of a chance to wander and ideas start to pop into my head....what if I did this or that....what about this colour combo or that one? Also referring back to your favourite colour schemes, or try just one colour and challenge yourself to make 6 different shapes, or just two colours and how many variations you can make.

A physical trip has always inspired me, with a trip to the ocean being my favourite holiday as I find this is where my soul is renewed. It is very important that we give ourselves time for relaxation and contemplation in our busy lives....this is really when our mojo returns!!!

And last of all (although there are many more ways, tips & tricks I could list here) the biggest way I have found to get out of a "glass rut" is to take a class or workshop!!!! Treat yourself to that big workshop...it will certainly inspire you and take your beadmaking/glass working to that next level!!! And remember it doesn't matter if you are not very good in the workshop with what you learn....it is the learning part that is important....take the experience home with you - take notes and photo's if allowed and go over and re-write your notes when you get home....and I almost guarantee that you will be cured of your beadmaking slump!!!

And don't worry we all get to feel this way from time to time....but just remembering what to do to help fix this is half the battle already won!!!

Happy bead making!!!!

Thanks Tracy!

DRIVING TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE

So, you have a website, but like everyone, you want more people to visit it.  More people = more sales after all.

Many people think that if they put a website up, people will visit it and buy. Not so!

So what's the secret to getting people to visit your website.  The secret is.... well, actually, come to think of it, there is no secret!  Driving traffic to your website is not an easy task and it certainly requires persistence and a lot of work!

There are things that you can do and need to do if you are to even start on the right path to getting people to your website.  Things that are very simple, yet many of us find these things hard to do.  Well, it would be truer to say, to do these things consistently. Its consistency and persistence that dictates our success. So let's take a look at what these essentials are.

Market yourself: Market yourself, your website and your product:  Everyone in business  needs to and does market themselves, even Doctors and other professionals.  Marketing is a fundamental part of life.  We market ourselves all day every day without thinking.  A job interview, teacher meeting, visit to the bank manager or even when we are trying to find a new romantic partner or friendship.  So why do so many of us find it difficult to market our work?  It's not bragging, being pushy or imposing on anyone.  We are happy to tell others about our friend's fantastic work, so why hesitate in selling ourselves?    Marketing, or selling, is simply a means of getting your work in front of people who WANT to buy it.  You will never make people buy what they don't want.

So how does this relate to your website? Well, first and foremost you have to market where you sell your products so people can go there, look and buy.  So market away.  Make sure you have your web address on everything. A business card, tags on your pieces, flyers, etc. and don't be shy to hand them out!

Mailing list:  Get a mailing list going.  Ask people (yes, pretty much everyone you know or come across) for their email addresses and let them know you will send out examples of your latest works, specials etc.

Social Networking:  Next hit the Social Networking scene.  Start up a Facebook or similar page, join Twitter or whatever pushes your buttons, but get networking.  Have your web address on all these mediums. Once you have done that, then let people know what you are doing by showing them pictures of your work and linking back to your website. It's amazing who you will find on Facebook from the lampworking world.  All the top names are there doing exactly what is being suggested here. And, I have purchased more than one of their beads from their postings on Facebook!

Blogging:   Blogging is a big commitment, but if  you can get into the swing of it, and do it on a regular basis, then its a fantastic way  to communicate about your product and drive traffic to your website. But the trick is, you have to set the expectation as to when people should look at your blog for a new post.... daily, every other day, weekly etc.... and then stick to it.  If you don't, this valuable resource will be lost and those following you will loose interest.  Google loves blogs because they are full of text/information and blogs often get ranked highly in search engines. Get your blog seen and you have more of a chance to drive traffic to your website.

Write Tutorials:  And share them everywhere.  Free tutorials may take a bit of time, but if you have your website address on them you will definitely benefit!

There are lots of other ways to get your web address out to the masses. You just need to be creative.  And remember, doing it once or twice will not allow you to reach your goal.  Marketing should be 50% of your business and you need to make time to do it consistently.

MOMKA GREEN SPARKLE

GREEN SPARKLE Rodger Sutherland recently tested Momka's new Sparkly Green.

Here's what Michael discovered.

Sparkly Green is quite dark, but not very dense.  Its a Pine Green shimmery sparkle that has nice silky variations when swirled around and mixed up.  It can also reduce to red. You can see Rodgers website here.

THE JOY OF STRINGER

 Rainbows JC Herrell
For the newbies who are having issues with stringer control take a look at JC Herrell's website.  JC is a very generous  with her knowledge and her stringer control is amazing!  Check out her work after you have finished reading and watching the tutorials.   JC has put this information on the web for everyone to use but she does accept donations.  You will find the donate buttons at the top and bottom of the pages.

The first on is practice tips with a great diagram on how to find that "sweet spot".  JC also gives tips on pulling stringer.

The final tutorial is about how to get great rings around your beads.

 LUDWIG MULTI LINE TOOL

Cynthia Ryan
The bead to the left was created by Cynthia Ryan using the Ludwig Multi Line Tool.  Cynthia purchased the tool last week and emailed to say the following...

"I just had to tell you how fantastic and fun the Ludwig Multi Line Tool is.  It makes cutting the hot silver glass, before reduction, so quick and easy.  The reduction colour was so much clearer and brighter because I didn't have to reheat the bead so many times as I razor cut it.  They looked great!".

BEADS TO SUPPORT KENYA AID

Kenya Aid
One of the Charities we support is  Kenya Aid.  They are having a major  fund raising dinner in November to raise much needed funds so they can continue their amazing work in Shikunga, Kenya.

Kenya Aid has made a huge difference to this community by providing medical services, a new hospital and a variety of health programs and education.  Their SHARE program is the flagship of their women's health projects which is making it possible for young women to stay in school and complete their education. Read about their other projects here
.
They would be very appreciative of any Lampwork/Flamework pieces for one of their fund raising events, a Silent Auction, at the dinner.  It's a great chance to not only give to a worthy cause but to also raise your profile.  Your cards will be put alongside your donation for people to take.   From my personal experience of donating in the past it was definitely worthwhile.

If anyone is interested in donating to this worthy organisation, please send me an email and I will let you know the details.

Thanks for your time and have a great week!
Warm Regards,

Kerry
