Dear families,
Yesterday, the third grade class stood outside the historical home of Paul Revere and performed their original ballad. They sang about every aspect of his life, from his craftsmanship, to his involvement in the American Revolution. They sang about his work and family. Unlike Longfellow's beloved poem, this song is not a fable of revolutionary heroism, but a portrait of a life. It is rich with details that connect Revere's life to their own: an image of a thirteen year old boy sweeping silver dust in his father's shop, and a reference to the bells he forged, which still ring in downtown Boston.
Singing this song outside his home and again inside the Old North Church where he worked as a young boy are experiences these students will not forget. Through the power of place and through the process of creating and performing music, they have become connected to an important period in history. It is a framework that will forever shape the way they learn about history.
This time of year we are seeing transformative performances taking shape all throughout the school. In second grade, we look forward to a new, original snake song, complete with choreography and instrumental accompaniment. In first grade, the students are hard at work memorizing their lines and songs for a musical about building materials. Through performances like these, children embody their learning and make lasting impressions. We can't wait to see what they will do next.
Warmly,
Diana Lam
Head of School

Third Grade Goes On-Site For Paul Revere Ballad Performance
On Thursday, April 26th the third grade class returned to the spots where their Expedition on Paul Revere originally began - the Old North Church and Paul Revere's House. This time, however, they returned as performers and educators in their own right. Accompanied by their teachers and led by Ms. Levi, the students performed their skit about the Longfellow poem, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, and their original ballad about the man and his many jobs. Paul Revere was a silversmith, a dentist and a soldier as well as a patriot. As the students point out "That guy was busy!" Their performances were enthusiastically received at both locations by staff and visitors, including a school group at the Old North Church. The morning's performances were capped off with a delicious (and well-deserved) lunch at Pizzeria Regina in the North End. Thank you to all parents who sent in donations and to several who joined us along the way.

From Paper to Performance: K2 Becomes a Real Orchestra
Friday, April 13th, the kindergarten class performed their paper orchestra concert, demonstrating the skills that have prepared them for their real instruments. Among the audience were last year's paper orchestra, who now perform as the Abreu orchestra, and the K1 class who will become the next generation of paper musicians. Family and friends gathered to watch the students perform and receive their graduation certificates from Head of School, Diana Lam.

This week, the students were ecstatic to receive their real instruments. Having learned how to balance the paper instruments and sit with performance posture, the young musicians instantly looked like naturals. For several students, the most challenging part was opening the case! They will perform on their real instruments at the Spring Concert on June 6 at the Longy School.

K2 Families Celebrate Nutrition
Following the Paper Orchestra performance, students and families headed downstairs for a cornucopia of healthy snacks and the unveiling of their new nutrition place mats, which provide illustrated information about keeping bodies strong. The children also sang an original song about food groups.
