Dear families,
As a school community, we rely on a wide network of support. The daily efforts of our students, teachers, staff, volunteers, and families are supported by a dedicated board and a diverse body of donors. These are people of many different vocations and backgrounds who have become invested in our mission and have chosen to use their resources to sustain our work.
Last night, Anne Reenstierna, one of Conservatory Lab's trustees hosted a joyful gathering at the Brimmer and May School of over one hundred and fifty Conservatory Lab supporters, which included a performance of the Dudamel Orchestra and presentations by several students as well as filmmakers Ben Loeterman and Laura Longsworth. The students performed seven pieces and received a roaring standing ovation. Old friends were impressed by how far we have come since the last time they visited the school, and new friends were in disbelief at the passion and poise with which our students performed and spoke.
The success of the event was a testament to the hard work of our board members, who are always working to grow our network of friends and supporters. It was also a testament to hard work of our students, teachers, staff, volunteers, and families, whose passion and energy shone through the music of the orchestra.
Warmly,
Diana Lam
Head of School

Monthly Assembly: Joyful, Eclectic
April's monthly assembly kicked off with a spirited performance by the K2 hip-hop artists, "The Rockin' Rainbows." Featuring the vocal talents of Emmett Bellow, Elijah and Emanuel Santiago, Joe Klinman, Bryan Da Costa, and a guest appearance by second grade session drummer Alan Aunaxe, the performance explored themes of diversity and ecology through a fusion of rap and dance-hall music.
The children's funky beats were answered by the dulcet tones of Resident Artist Joshua Garver's solo violin performance of the Allemand, from JS Bach's second violin partita. The Dudamel Flute Quintet delivered an elegant rendition of Waltz for Flute Trio by Massachusetts composer Amy Beach.
Resident Artist Rebecca Levi led the school in the civil rights song, "Carry It On," and the assembly concluded with the 3rd grade performance of "The Ballad of Paul Revere."

3rd Grade Reveals Paul Revere: The Untold Stories
Last Friday, the third grade class stood before the assembled student body and delivered a stirring rendition of their original song, "The Ballad of Paul Revere." Sung to the tune of the popular colonial ballad, "Revolutionary Tea," the students' song depicts lesser-known aspects of Revere's life, including the untold stories behind his famous midnight ride. In the process of writing the song, the students studied the contemporary music of the revolutionary war era and employed performance practices of the day to make their work sound authentic.

This performance, followed by a celebration with families, wrapped up their Learning Expedition, "Fact or Fiction: Why we remember Paul Revere." After spring break, the class will perform their song at The Old North Church, an historic landmark that factored prominently in Paul Revere's life.
Students will publish their "Ballad of Paul Revere" in the form of a "chapbook," illustrated with their original black-and-white scratchboard engravings.
A chapbook is a small, inexpensive booklet used to publish poetry that was popular in England and the colonies in Paul Revere's time and was sold in by street peddlers called chapmen. Copies of the chapbook will be donated to the historic and educational sites and experts who helped the students during their expedition.
