Dear families,
As a school community, we work for our children. We measure our success by their success, and we take pride in the young men and women they are becoming. We know that a strong elementary education provides a foundation for lifelong learning, and this responsibility is the guiding star by which we steer our course.
Students leave Conservatory Lab prepared for the next phase of life. Of the sixth grade students who chose to take the exam school tests this year, 67% were accepted into schools of their choice. Although our sample size is admittedly small, this is a remarkable statistic for an Elementary school, particularly in the first year offering a sixth grade. Meanwhile, we are working closely with all of our graduating students to guide them in selecting a school that is right for them.
From time to time, we hear from our alumni. They are scattered throughout the exam schools, charter schools, and public schools of Boston, playing in youth orchestras and singing in choruses. Some are now attending colleges like Emerson, Berklee, and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, with majors that range from music to culinary arts to biochemistry. Wherever our students may go when they leave our school, they bring with them a skill set that will help them to adapt to new environments, express themselves in creative and articulate ways, and collaborate as members of a team. These are the greatest measures of success.
Warmly,
Diana Lam
Head of School

"Spring Fling!" Will Feature Choral and Orchestral Collaborations
Dudamel, Bernstein, and Abreu ensembles will perform separately and combined at the March 25 "Spring Fling!" community concert. Performing together creates an opportunity for students to learn from their peers in other ensembles, sharing the strengths of each group with the other.
The Dudamel/Bernstein choir will perform the Shaker traditional tune "Simple Gifts," as well as a medley of rounds, joined by Abreu choir for the lively Caribbean folksong "Shake the Papaya Down." As a combined orchestral ensemble, the Dudamel and Bernstein ensembles will perform an arrangement of the Irish tune, "Far From Home." These combined numbers promise to be highlights of an exciting lineup which also includes Bernstein Orchestra's first performance with winds and strings combined, and Dudamel Orchestra's first performance with percussion.
The glitch on the ticketing website has now been fixed, and correct price levels are once again available.

Fifth Graders Launch Service Project
by Rayne, Dorothy, Jarel, and Nechemiah
Fifth Grade is embarking on a new service project! We will be working with Cradles to Crayons in Brighton to collect items such as gently used clothes, books, toys, shoes, and other things for children, ages newborn to twelve years old.
On April 2nd the fifth grade will begin a drive here at The Conservatory Lab. We will put a bin in each classroom so all members of our community can donate to this project. Members of the fifth grade class will also visit each classroom in the upcoming weeks to describe this project in detail. The fifth grade would be grateful if families could donate things such as clothing, toys, new art supplies, diapers, and shoes, as these are the items Cradles to Crayons has a low supply of. The items we donate will be distributed to children in need throughout the Boston area.
On Thursday, April 12 the fifth graders will travel to Cradles to Crayons to deliver all the donated items and to volunteer our time sorting items and cleaning toys that will be distributed to Boston area children.

Annual Lottery for New Class Held on March 14
Shouts of joy and jubilation were heard from parents on the other end of the phone as the news was given that there was a seat designated for their child at Conservatory Lab Charter School for next year! There were 233 applicants for the 11 seats available in K-1 for totally new incoming families. Raffael Degruttola, educator, poet and longtime advocate for the arts in education, drew the names from the bowl. The total waiting list of families wishing to attend Conservatory Lab now stands at 1200, causing somebody to remark, "looks like getting into this school is almost as competitive as getting into the exam schools!' We welcome all the new families into the Conservatory Lab Charter School fold. |
