Dear families,

The energy and passion of our Parent Advisory Council surrounding the March 25 Spring Fling concert has been inspiring. As volunteers galvanize around the preparation and marketing of this event, I am convinced that we have an event in store that will surpass even last year's great success.

The students are sounding more polished and more vibrant each day as I walk past their rehearsals, and the products that will be displayed at the pre-concert gallery walk richly capture the exuberance of the learning process. Every year, the depth and quality of our students' work improves, as each class leaves a legacy to inspire the next generation of students.

For me, the highlight of this community concert is the way it brings together so many members of our community in celebration of the work our children do together. Our lives are interlocking, overlapping, and concentric circles of communities joined together by connections of family and friendship, geography and common interest. As the only full-school concert of the year, this is a great opportunity to bring together the far reaches of our social networks to connect with one another through and for a common purpose: our children.

Thank you for all you do to make this event and our school a celebration of community.

Exploring History Through Song

Diane Taraz

On Tuesday, third graders welcomed Diana Taraz, director of the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers, as a guest lecturer in their Expedition on the life and times of Paul Revere. Taking students on a musical tour of the eighteenth century, Taraz presented a sampling of "broadside ballads," story-songs that were set to pre-existing tunes and sung as entertainment throughout colonial society. Students were fascinated by the rich imagery through which colonists conveyed their conflicting feelings about British rule.

Studying the ballads also opened a door to a discussion of language and poetic style. Students recognized the recurring devices through which colonial lyricists altered words to make them rhyme, or rearranged sentences to fit the meter. These devices will be useful as they begin to write their own ballad in the Colonial style to share their knowledge of Paul Revere.

Paper Orchestra Strikes its First Chord

Paper Bass

After weeks of cutting, gluing, papier-mâché, and painting, the K2 class held its first Paper Orchestra rehearsal on Monday this week. Silence fell on the room as the children, seated in orchestral formation, received their instruments and their first instructions in instrument care and positioning. In ten carefully practiced steps, the students learned to bring their instruments from rest position to playing position, a foundational skill which must be rehearsed until it can be performed effortlessly.

The students are ecstatic to begin rehearsals and share their music.  As one student explained, "When everyone hears the viola, they get joy."

Community Concerts

Come support our resident artists, performing throughout the community!

Levi Comstock and Joshua Garver will perform in the Brookline Symphony Concert on Sunday, March 4 at 8:00pm, at All Saints Parish in Brookline. The concert will include works by Bizet and Bruckner.

Christopher Schroeder will perform in the Boston Opera Collaborative performance of Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème, March 2-4 and 9-11 at Tower Auditorium, MassArt, 621 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA.

Friday/Saturday performances begin at 8:00 PM, Sunday performances begin at 3:00 PM. David Gram directs. Adam Boyles conducts. Tickets are available for purchase online or for reservation by phone at (617)-517-5883.

Set in the mid-nineteenth century, Puccini's masterpiece endures and resonates with contemporary audiences because of its breathtaking music and its timeless story of love, loss, and the sacrifices we make for our art.

Although the romanticized world of the artist contrasts with the harsh realities of life, these are recognizable characters that feel deeply, think profoundly, and love with every fiber of their being.
