Dear Families,
As we grow up, our world expands. Our community grows from a small family circle to a larger web of friends, neighbors, classmates, and colleagues. This growth is not something that happens to us; it is something we choose. With one courageous act after another, we open ourselves up to share our gifts with a wider sphere.
This week, our K2 class took their joy for music to the Veronica P. Smith Senior Center and began a relationship that will continue throughout the year. Through their Learning Through Music Expedition, they will explore ways that they can participate in the community by sharing their gifts where they are most needed.
Our charter as a lab school challenges us to grow in the same way, sharing our gifts with a growing network of other schools and music programs. Last week, together with Longy School of Music, we hosted a conference of Abreu Fellows and El Sistema teachers from around the country, interested in seeing the impact of our unique program. Students and teachers had the opportunity to work with Alaska Teacher of the Year Lori Heagy and to make music with professional musicians from throughout the country.
Every day our world expands. Every day we have opportunities to share our gifts with a wider sphere. Sometimes it takes courage, sometimes it is even challenging, but it is always exciting.

Warmly,
Diana Lam
Head of School

K2 to the Rescue! Bringing Joy to Brighton Seniors
On Thursday, October 6th, the K2 class walked to the Veronica P. Smith Senior Center and took center stage in the activity center by performing a medley of songs for the assembled seniors.
This jubilant performance was in response to an urgent missive brought to their classroom by messenger. The letter, specifically written to these K-2 students, called for assistance in meeting an obvious need in the City of Boston for more joy. The letter stated that all other city agencies were otherwise occupied with their own directives and no other group could respond as well as they to this urgent need.
Without a moment's hesitation and recognizing the importance of the call, the students immediately sprang into action by rehearsing the repertoire of songs that they felt the seniors and others would like.
The performance is a component of their Learning Through Music Expedition, "Music for Everyone," and marks the beginning of a relationship between the K2 class and the senior center that will continue throughout the year. Students will also be looking for other ways to share their joy with the world around them and become community helpers.

El Sistema Conference: Sharing the Music
Last week, as part of a conference co-hosted with Longy school of music, guests from El Sistema programs around the country as well as New England Conservatory's Abreu Fellows crowded into Conservatory Lab rehearsals to learn and observe. Students made the guests feel welcome by sharing their space and inviting them to participate in some of their songs and activities. The week culminated with a "muestra," a Venezuelan tradition of bringing guests to a few minutes of each class in the building so that they can see the progression of learning from the youngest to the oldest. Joy poured out of the music room as the more than 30 professional musicians joined Dudamel Orchestra for their final rehearsal of the week. |
