 Dear Families,

Last night, our Chamber Orchestra performed at the memorial service of Yoel Camayd Freixas, a man who was not only a great friend to our school, but a champion of public education throughout the community. He believed that education was the way to empowerment, justice, and democracy, and he worked tirelessly to provide equal access to the highest quality education. He loved music, and he understood its power to bring together a community to work for social change.

I could hear his dream alive in our children. Many of them never met Yoel, but each of them is a beneficiary of his legacy. Even more, they are now its custodians. We all are. As we look back on lives well lived-as we consider the people who have left our community better than they found it-we find a challenge. Who will continue the work for equality through education, for justice through strong communities? And who will prepare our children to take up these causes when we are gone?

As a school, we must answer this call together. We do it every day by giving our best work and our best selves to each child and expecting their best in return, by solving problems together, and by investing our time and energy in support of the community.

In memorializing friends and leaders who have shaped our community, we give thanks, we remember the lessons they taught us, and we look ahead to what they have left undone. Each of us can be an agent of change in the world.

Warmly,

Chamber Orchestra's First Performance Celebrates a Life

Sept8flutesOn Thursday night, at its first performance of the year, Chamber Orchestra received two standing ovations from leaders of the Latino community in Boston. Their performance at the memorial service honored Yoel Camayd-Freixas, a long time supporter of Conservatory Lab and husband of former staff member Ana Perez. The students opened the service with performances of Ode to Joy and Amazing Grace, which were followed by remarks from family and friends remembering Yoel's life and his contributions to Boston community, empowering Latino youth and supporting public education. Speakers included Governor Michael Dukakis, Mel King, and Head of School Diana Lam.

For the students, it was an opportunity to see the impact one life can make and experience the emotional impact of their music. "I couldn't believe it," remarked 3rd grader Mark Anthony, "when we finished, the audience was crying tears."

Wind Players Create a Musical Timeline

The Bernstein wind section is studying influential composers of the past in order to understand music of the present. This assignment will help to bridge a gap between the Listening Project and El Sistema performance studies, putting their orchestra repertoire into a stylistic and historical context. To kick off the weekly discussions and listening assignments, the class has created a music history time line that spans an entire wall in the Winds Studio.  From Palestrina to Petmusicaltimelineer Maxwell Davis, they will investigate the musical contributions of celebrated composers throughout western classical music history and learn how to listen to the various genres of classical music including the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Contemporary and 21st Century periods.
