Dear Families,

One of our second graders recently described performing music as "an explosion of joy."  I can not think of a better way to describe the celebrations that are taking place throughout our school community this month.  In every classroom and ensemble, the performers are taking the stage to proudly present three months of learning, practicing, and creating.

Our exhibitions and concerts are a chance for teachers to step aside and let the students show off.  The children have truly become the experts in their Learning Through Music topics, and the ensembles are ready to perform just like professionals.

This week we have been fortunate to have many guests come through our doors and share the celebrations with us.  Parents have come to see the classroom exhibitions, reporters from the Boston Globe have come to take pictures and interview students, and guests from throughout the music and educational community have come in to see what we do, including Rumi Naito and Midori Takeishi, members of the Leadership in Music Commission from Tokyo, Japan.  Next week, the celebration continues with a site visit from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the winter concert, and the 4th Grade LTM Exhibition.

Celebration is at the heart of performance.  Come celebrate with us!

Warmly,

Diana Lam

Chinatown Walking Tour

ChinatownOn Thursday, December 2nd, students did fieldwork in Boston's Chinatown to investigate how Chinese Americans settled in Boston.

Fourth graders are also exploring the cultural heritages of their own families.  Jason Wei's poem (below) shows how two or more cultures mingle to shape our identities.

I am FromJason
By Jason Wei

I am from my mom screaming

"Get up you two, time to go to school!"

Waking up like a dead zombie.

Waking up is where I am from.

I am from playing tennis since I was nine,

Hitting the ball as hard as I can,

And putting on my shock to get more power.

My favorite sport is where I am from.

I am from munching French toast for breakfast.

Crunching on pizza for lunch,

And rice for dinner everyday.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are where I am from.

I am from celebrating Chinese New Year.

Watching dancing lions wag their tails

And getting hundreds of dollars each year.

A family tradition is where I am from.

I am from Halloween

Scaring my friends to nowhere

Getting candy around Brighton.

My favorite holiday is where I am from.

I am from staring at the colorful lights

Getting presents ready on Christmas Eve

Opening wonderful presents after midnight

A peaceful Christmas is where I am from.

I am from my friends speaking Chinese

My other friends speaking Spanish

Playing with them outside every weekend

My best friends are where I am from.

I am from being called Jas, Jay, Justin, and Jason

Me being called names

And being called in Chinese and English

My nicknames and my names are where I am from.

I am from being born

October 25, 2000

The year of the dragon on the Chinese calendar

Where my life began is where I am from.

I am from China,

Living in America

Two different sides of me, that makes me who I am

My wonderful life is where I am from.

Concert Clothes
Please make sure your children try on their concert clothes this week to make sure they still fit!

Concert attire is white on top and black on bottom.  Long hair should be worn up, so that it does not obscure the child's face for pictures.

Chorus

This week in El Sistema:

  • Another chamber orchestra gave its debut performance this afternoon at the Faneuil St. Library.  They were proud ambassadors of Conservatory Lab, as they took their music out into the community.

  • Many visitors have come through the classrooms this week.  Among them were Tony Woodcock, president of New England Conservatory, and Isabel Trautwein, a current Abreu Fellow.  Together they performed an interactive musical story for the first and second grade orchestra.  The students loved it!

  • The K1 class has shown amazing cooperation, responsibility, and joy by sharing their singing with rooms full of visitors this week.
