Dear Families,

Thanksgiving Day is our national holiday specific to giving thanks.

We give thanks for every student at Conservatory Lab:

    for the music they play,

    the stories they write,

the science experiments they conduct, and

    the questions they ask.

We give thanks

    for their curiosity and imagination.

for their high energy and enthusiasm

the sounds of their footsteps in the corridors.

For the truth be told, our students make us teachers and teaching is our life purpose.  Our students keep us young by pushing us to continue to learn and grow.

Our families join with us in warm inclusion, to provide the best possible education for this group of children who play instruments, skip on the playground, and each day, learn and learn and learn.

We give thanks because we have the privilege of watching your children grow before our eyes.  We cannot imagine another profession that could be half as rewarding.  We thank parents and guardians for trusting us with the honor of educating your children.  We are honored you choose Conservatory Lab.

We give thanks for each and every one of you.  SuperNashariCooking

Warmly,

Diana Lam

Head of School

Grade1Maps

From Sea to Shining Sea

If you walk into the first grade classroom this fall, chances are you'll hear students singing "This Land is Your Land," "America the Beautiful" or other songs about our country. If you visited this week, you would have seen students deeply engrossed in putting together giant floor map puzzles of the United States.  In their Learning Through Music expedition, This Land is Our Land, first graders are learning about American symbols, from the Bald Eagle to the Statue of Liberty, and the big ideas about America each symbol represents.  They are learning about President Obama, the First Family,  First Dog Bo, and the White House.  What would a first grader do to help people if he or she were President? Come visit the first grade classroom and find out.

Stone Soup: A Thanksgiving Recipe from K1

In their Learning Through Music expedition on cooking, K1 students are perfecting their recipes for stone soup.  They are discovering that there are many ways to make stone soup, but in all of them the secret ingredient is cooperation!  Here is the recipe they made as a class this week:

Stone Soup
1. Start with a big pot full of water
2. Drop in one or two large stones
3. Add some salt
4. Chop and peel potatoes, then add
5. Chop carrots, then add
6. Mix in beans and celery

Dr. Leonard Brown, Dr. Tim Engles, Dr. Ron Savage

This week in El Sistema:

  • On Friday, an ensemble from the John Coltrane Memorial Educational Outreach program brought an exciting performance to the 3rd through 5th grade assembly.  Toes were tapping and a smile was on every face.
  • After the 1st and 2nd grade bass section shared their rendition of Shortnin'Bread last week, the other instruments were eager to perform.  This week, we heard the violas play The Mississippi Blues, second grade violinsplayed and danced to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and first graders showed off their work on Bile 'em Cabbage Down.
  • Several students have been volunteering
    DaborahVictoria
