Six Keys to Harmony Clinic

The tour started in Kokkola, Finland where we had two clinics in Kokkola One filled with riders new to our program and another clinic covering Advanced Riding Skills with members of the Kvikant Western Riders

who have participated in several of our clinics on our previous visits to Finland.   Many thanks to our good friend Kenneth Puskala for his tireless work organizing these clinics and to Kenneth's parents for providing comfortable lodging and delicious meals for us in their lovely home.

At the end of these clinics, our friend Maria Bucht drove us to her farm in Kalix Sweden for a clinic there. Maria is a teacher and practitioner of the Alexander Technique, a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination.  t Ed participated in one of Maria's clinic several years ago in Sweden and found it very enlightening and beneficial in improving posture, balance and body awareness for riding as well as everyday life.

Clinics

From Maria's we took the night train hundreds of kilometers south to Udevalla Sweden for a clinic organized by our good friend and former Mounted Palace Guard, Kenny Pettersson.  Kenny did an excellent job organizing his first clinic for us with a full slate of riders and many spectators in a beautiful facility.  Kenny spent three months with us in Georgia learning all our training methods and now teaches riding and trains horses in Sweden along with conducting his very popular roping clinics.

Arena

After this clinic we were off to Stockholm for our second clinic with the Swedish Army's First Cavalry Regiment, Mounted Palace Guards. This clinic, specifically designed for the unique riding requirements of the mounted band, included 35 band members and their horses in the regiment's large outdoor arena.   The clinic featured classroom, ground and mounted instruction which improved their communication with their horses and lighter responses to cues.  The skills

Classroom

learned in this clinic helped the riders have better control and more confidence as they rode in formation while playing their beautiful marching music.

With the size of this clinic Ed and Elizabeth needed some additional help and wish to thank our assistants Deenie McKeever, our good friend from Georgia, Kenny Pettersson and Lena Darius.  Lena is a very accomplished, upper level rider and trainer who has participated in several of our clinics in the past.  It was a pleasure working with all these excellent horse people during this clinic.  We certainly wish to thank Lt. Roger Johansen for hosting and organizing our clinic at the Cavalry Regiment.  It is always such an honor for us to work with the fine soldiers of this historic and esteemed regiment.

Honorary DoctorateAfter military transport to the airport and a late night flight from Stockholm we arrived in Sicily the next day where we conducted clinics in five different locations.  After our clinic in the city of Godrano the mayor presented to Ed an Honorary Doctorate Award to commemorate Ed's work with the local horse owners.

Italian Forest Guard

One of our clinics in Sicily was conducted for the Italian Forest Guard (similar to our US Forest Service Rangers).   Forty rangers and their horses from all over Sicily gathered for this clinic to help improve their understanding of the horse and their riding skills.

We greatly appreciate our dear friend of many years, Franco Barbagallo, for organizing all our clinics in Sicily. We are thankful for his devotion of time, energy and hard work. He transported us to all locations and translated Ed's teachings into Italian during every clinic. Franco is an internationally renowned photo journalist  and lifelong horseman.

Trekking in Sicily
Franco was also instrumental, along with Salvatore Baggesi, our friend and horse trekking outfitter in making arrangements for our wonderful eight day riding holiday through the spectacular mountains and ancient villages of the Madonie National Forest in northwestern Sicily.  This amazing experience of Sicilian culture and scenery was greatly enjoyed by all participants.  Our friend from Sweden, photo journalist Lena Holmgren joined us on this ride.  Lena's story of this riding adventure along with her beautiful photos will appear in a future issue of Sweden's most popular horse magazine, "Lucky Rider".  We are offering this unforgettable riding holiday again in May 2011.  We hope you will join us!  Riding Holiday InfoEurope with Ed DabneyWhile in Sicily we spent a few days working with horses, demonstrating the Six Keys to Harmony and starting a couple of colts at the School of Mediterranean Horsemanship near Catania.  We appreciate the assistance of senior trainer and instructor, Lorrie and the hospitality of our host Pucci Moriana, well known breeder of the rare Oriental horse.

Also in Sicily we visited our friend and top level international combined driving competitor, Helen Yngvesson for a day of lessons at her facility.  Ed started a horse for Helen's neighbor and enjoyed a very interesting tour of their olive oil processing plant.

Spanish Riding School

Spanish Riding SchoolDefinitely a major highlight of our most recent European trip was our visit to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria.  "To see these master classical riders mounted on the magnificent white Lipizzaner stallions riding in their opulent 16th century Baroque riding hall was a fulfillment of one of my life long dreams."  We spent three days at the Spanish Riding School touring the facility and watching the daily training sessions.  It was truly an education in perfection of the seat and lightness of the aids.

The training of the young horses is done in a very gradual way as the five best of the four year old stallions are sent to the Riding School each year from their breeding farm.  Each horse is assigned to one rider for life.  The horses begin their training at age four and will continue in daily training for six years then they will begin their public performance career at age ten while always continuing to perfect their haute ecole' training. Vienna is a beautiful city steeped in classical culture, art and music.  We look forward to a return visit there in the future.

Italian Intern

Seat Lesson with EdSince we returned from Europe in early October we have been pleased to host a young Sicilian horseman as an intern here at

our training facility in Georgia. Paolo Cricchio served an internship with us learning all our training methods and working with numerous horses here.  He works for the trekking company that conducts our riding holidays in Sicily and will be managing their new guest ranch there upon his return to Sicily.  We have enjoyed having Paolo with us.  We appreciate his hard work and wish him much success in his future horse training endeavors.
