Paul Buch

For the sixth year in a row, Hazzan Paul Buch, '05 was one of the organizers of the Claremont community's 9-11 commemoration. Hazzan Buch, the immediate past president of the Claremont Interfaith Council, led 700 community members in song as part of Claremont's "Interfaith Walk and Rally for Hope and Peace." In addition, he chanted the "El Malei Rachamim" in front of an equal number of attendees during an evening service held at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in San Dimas.

   

 

Dr. Marvin A. Sweeney, Professor of Tanakh at AJRCA and Marvin Sweeney

Underwood Professor of Divinity at Yonsei University (Korea) presented two Divrei Torah at the Yonsei University College of Theology Chapel.  The first, on Parshat Shophetim, was presented on September 8, 2011, and the second, on Parshat Ki Tetze, was presented on September 14, 2011.  Dr. Sweeney is serving as visiting professor at Yonsei for the fall semester 2011.

 

   

  

The review, byJonathan Friedmann Cantor Jonathan Friedmann, '10, of the new Koren Sacks Rosh HaShana Mahzor, with translation and commentary by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, has been posted on the publisher's website (www.korenpub.com) and is being distributed in the promotional packet for the book. The review first appeared in Cantor Friedmann's regular column for the The Daily Rabbi (www.thedailyrabbi.com), where he muses on various aspects of Jewish music and reviews books of Jewish musical and general interest.  

 

Articles by fifth year Rabbinical student, Dr. Ilana Goldhaber-Gordon 

appeared in two recent publications. "Living with Magic," about Ilana Goldhaber-Gordonher year at the Conservative Yeshiva in Israel, appeared in the Fall 2011 issue of CJ: Voices of Conservative/Masorti Judaism and the latest issue of Sh'ma: A Journal of Jewish Responsibility published "Abraham's Attributes: 'A Source of Strength' "in which she wrote about akeidat yitzhak (the binding of Isaac), and how our ancestors found meaning in that story.

 

  


Nina Perlmutter

Rabbi Nina Perlmutter, '09 was quoted throughout the article, "Spirits fulfilled: Adults study for b'nai mitzvah ceremonies," which ran in the August 19th issue of the Jewish News of Greater Phoenix. Rabbi Perlmutter, who herself had a Bat Mitzvah at the age of 48, described adult b'nai mitvahs as "a joyful, soulful Jewish experience for adults and I believe a model for the congregation," adding it's powerful for young b'nai mitzvahs "to see adults wanting to study and learn their tradition."

 

 

 

Stephen Macht, a third year Chaplaincy student has been invited Macht

to present his paper, "Aristotle's Tragic Reversal Illuminates Maimonides' Teshuva" at the Third Annual International Conference on Visual and Performing Arts to be held in Athens, Greece in June 2012.
