LanaLou's, 362 Powell Street

In the middle of the 300 block of Powell (
Hoko's old spot) is a newly decorated restaurant named LanaLou's offering comfort food six days a week. The makeover includes real church pews, cherubs and chandeliers with a soundtrack of 80's punk favorites.

Open for just over 4 weeks the spot has already developed a following. And due to hits like apple pie stuffed French toast and local smoked salmon benny there is a steady stream of admirers on the weekends. Looks like someone just upped the competition for Deacon's Corner.
Overall it's a cozy spot for brunch, lunch and dinner with live music on select evenings. The menu offers plenty of options for the cocktail crowd and veggie loves alike.

Waste Drive at Pat's Pub

To celebrate Waste Reduction Week, the Strathcona BIA hosted an E-Waste Drive on Thursday October 21. We collected just over 1 ton of e-waste.

Spring Cleaning?

If you didn't have a chance to make it out to the event, don't worry. We will be hosting another E-Waste Drive the week of April 18-22, 2011 in celebration of Earth Day.

On Earth Day 2008 we collected 4 tons  in under 4 hours. Let's make 2011 twice as huge!

If you have some old electronics that you need to get rid of now, give us a call. We will have Reboot pick it up for you, refurbish what they can, and recycle the rest through Free Geek. We'll even record it for you on the Resource Exchange. Give us a call today at 604-258-2727 and we will take care of your e-waste.

East Side Culture Crawl Stop:
Octopus Studios, 393 Powell St

For five years Octopus Studios has provided low cost space for artists and artisans in a 3000 sqft workspace on Powell St. Currently the space is home to 14 artists, 10 of which will be exhibiting during the upcoming East Side Culture Crawl later this month. The artists range from painters and photographers to guitar craftsmen and soap makers. Beata Kacy who runs the space with her partner Nik Palmer says this will be the third year the studio has participated in the Crawl. They are expecting upwards of 800 visitors this year.

From her cozy studio space at the entrance of Octopus, Kacy offers courses in jewelry, soap making and other craft. "Whenever I learn something new I try to pass on the skills," she explains. Make sure to check out new items like industrial felt & leather belts, fuse glass and metal clay jewelry all available on the Crawl. Heading through Kacy's studio to the back of the building you enter a large space with vaulted ceilings and more studios in a loft section. In this space her partner Palmer creates fine custom leather goods with his son (www.palmerandsons.ca) using traditional methods, heritage materials, reclaimed leather and vintage tools to produce once of a kind bags, cuffs and bets.

Fashionmark Solutions &
Diane Kennedy Eco-Boutique Fashion
#301-343  Railway Street

Ever wonder why some garments fit like a glove and others bunch up and show off the wrong bits? The key to a proper fit is an experienced pattern maker. Fashionmark Solutions on Railway has been in the business of fit for over 13 years, assisting their clients from sketch through pattern, grading, markers and specification.

Fashionmark can assist at any point in the pattern making process. But from start to finish there are a few basic steps: pattern making (sample below), grading (sizing), marker making and specification sheets. Owner Diane Kennedy notes it can take over 6 months from sketch to sales rack, and that's if there are no surprises. Fashionmark also helps with fabric yield so that the client gets the most out of their bolt, minimizing waste and increasing value.

Pattern

Driven by a lifelong interest in fashion and design, Kennedy first looked into perusing fashion design in grade nine. In 2007 she launched a line of bamboo separates under her own name. She started the line because she was unsatisfied with the options available to plus size women, noting that none of her customers were designing for the demographic. "It's a huge market, 62% of the US population is over a size 16," explained Kennedy, "I realized who better to create a proper fitting line than a pattern maker?"

Items from the Diane Kennedy Fall 2010 Line

It proved to be an under served market; already the line is established in boutiques across Canada and the US. And due to popular demand the line is now available in sizes small through 3X. The secret to well fitted plus size garments goes back to the pattern. Many other companies develop their sizing from a sample size which falls around 4-6, instead of a plus size. Kennedy creates a separate pattern for each size range, ensuring a perfect fit.

As a strong advocate for supporting local jobs and manufacturing in Canada, Kennedy ensures her line is made locally in East Vancouver with premium Canadian knit fabric made from 100% Certified Organic bamboo fibers.

Stop by  #301 -343 Railway during the East Side Culture Crawl  to meet Diane and check out the line.
