Mural in Progress
The newest addition to the Strathcona BIA mural program is almost completed at 569 Powell Street. Visit artist Nelson Garcia, of Nomadic Alternative Productions, at the site (Downtown Community Heather Centre) as he puts on the finishing touches. BC Hydro Power Smart sponsors the 2010 BIA BC Sustainability AwardsEnvironmental Sustainability Award The BIABC Sustainable Business Award will be awarded to one BIA member of each of the three BIABC regions. The award will go to a BIA business member that displays environmental responsibility and encourages sustainable business practices. The nominated businesses must demonstrate one or more of the following:- Leadership on environment, sustainability, and climate change - Energy conservation methods through technological and/or habit changes- Taken steps to prevent, reduce and eliminate various waste streams associated with their product or service- Switch to cleaner technologies where available and practical- Environmental philosophy throughout the operations.You can nominate yourself or a neighbour for the award which includes a Greenest BIA Certificate, recognition in a number of publications and an Energy Star Brother Multifunction printer/scanner/fax/copier (worth over $500).

625 Powell Street Re-NotificationSt. James Community Service Society invites the community to the temporary Powell Place Emergency Shelter at 625 Powell Street for an open house to provide information on interior alterations to the site. The alterations would expand the number of beds from 26 to 52 though March 2011. This expansion is due to construction taking place at the original Powell Place shelter at 329 Powell.
Information will also be available regarding the redevelopment of the original Powell Place shelter (329 Powell), which is the shelters permanent location. The
ASPECT Small Business Employee Training Program (SBETP) is focused on helping small businesses to grow the potential of their lower skilled workers (aka growth employees) by providing access to training courses that are tailored to the needs of small businesses and their employees. The program offers small business employers a training credit of up to $900.00 per employee to be used towards training courses that are specific to the employee's needs and will assist them to grow within your organization.
Why the ASPECT Small Business Training Employee Program is Beneficial to Your Business - Training helps to create the reputation of a great place to work and results in fewer
wage demands, less absenteeism, and a longer list of job applicants. - Knowledgeable
employees make fewer mistakes. - Training can
increase the ability to adopt new technologies and methods. - Employee turnover
is reduced as trained employees can grow within your business. - Training builds a
motivated and committed team. What employers are eligible? Employers with 50 employees or less are eligible to apply for the SBETP.
What employees are eligible? Employees who did not complete high school or have high school diplomas but
lack skills essential to their position are eligible for the program. Those holding post secondary diplomas are not eligible. More than 1 employee per employer may be eligible.
What is the cost to employers? There is no cost to employers for this program. It is funded by
the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement. For more
