New Program for Financial Education is Engaging and Effective
Howard County Chamber Pledges to Support Partnership Between School System and Junior Achievement
On Wednesday morning, a group of Howard County eighth graders were buying houses, working out their grocery budgets and deciding if they could afford vacations, all in a virtual world that drives home financial literacy lessons in the form of a computer game.
The computer simulation is one part of a comprehensive economics education program that is being instituted by the Howard County Public School System under a new partnership with Junior Achievement of Central Maryland. The partnership, signed Wednesday at a ceremony at Lime Kiln Middle School, provides the educational materials at no cost to the school system through a number of sponsorships and will ensure all county eighth graders meet state financial education standards.

The Howard County Chamber Will Be Working for Businesses During the 2012 Legislative Session
Yesterday at noon, both the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates convened for the state's 430th legislative session. The Maryland General Assembly will meet in session for 90 days in Annapolis and then adjourn on April 9th at midnight.
For the next 90 days, the General Assembly will be addressing between 2,000 and 3,000 pieces of legislation. During this time, the Chamber's legislative committee will track and analyze legislation affecting the business community.
Please visit the Chamber's website to view links to current legislation and advocacy alerts that will help you stay apprised of issues in Annapolis.
Elected officials have very difficult decisions to make. A billion dollar budget shortfall coupled with anticipated federal budget cuts will mean few new projects can be brought home to districts when dollars are so tight.
If you have any questions pertaining to a specific bill or subject matter, please contact Kesa Bruce, Director of Legislative Affairs, at 410-730-4111, ext. 106 or kbruce@howardchamber.com
To view the most current legislation introduced in the House and Senate, visit the Maryland General Assembly website and click on Bill Information and Status.
