Greetings! Here comes the sun! As we say goodbye to Spring, we welcome barbecues, picnics, beach parties and outdoor summer fun. Many of my clients are asking about sunscreens and how to stay healthy under the summer sun.
................................................................
While a little sun is actually a good thing (it's the best way for your body to get much-needed Vitamin D), a sunburn is not. Many sunscreens contain a chemical called Oxybenzone, a synthetic estrogen linked to the production of free radicals in the body, and/or Diethanolamine (DEA), which is used as a
thickener in various brands of sunscreen,
shampoo, soap, and hairspray.
A 2006 University of North Carolina study indicated that
DEA can interfere with optimal nervous system development, as it blocks the body's ability to absorb a nutrient called choline,
which is essential to the
nervous system.
Choline is an integral component of a neurotransmitter called
acetylcholine, without which the nervous system cannot function properly.
While we all want to avoid oxybenzone, children and pregnant women may especially want to avoid products containing DEA, as the growing nervous systems of children and fetuses require large amounts of choline for proper development.
Luckily, it is becoming easier than ever to find foods as well as beauty and home products without unnecessary and damaging chemicals. Health food stores like Whole Foods Market can provide just about anything you might be looking for, but the internet abounds with options. Check out the Environmental Working Group for information on best and worst sunscreen choices.
When it comes to your health, I believe it is worth the effort to seek out high-quality items. Remember the goal is to treat your body as well as you can in all aspects so that it will reward you with many years of vibrant health and happiness. ..............................................................

Recipe of the Month The Best Guacamole
Nothing says summer bbq like guacamole, and this is a crowd-pleaser for even non-fans. I usually triple the recipe, and still the bowl is scraped clean! I love the abundance of cilantro (a fragrant super-green that is known to remove heavy metals from the body), and the chunky texture. Serve with organic tortilla chips or spread on a wrap in lieu of mayo.
INGREDIENTS 2 ripe avocados - room temperature 1/2 red onion, minced 1-2 serrano chiles, stems and seeds removed, minced 1 large bunch cilantro leaves, finely chopped juice of 1 fresh lime or lemon 1/2 teaspoon coarse Celtic sea salt A dash of freshly grated black pepper 1/2 ripe tomato, seeds and pulp removed, chopped red radishes or jicama for garnish
1) Cut avocados in half. Remove seed. Scoop out avocado from the peel, put in a mixing bowl. 2) Using a fork, mash the avocado. Add the chopped onion, cilantro, lime or lemon, salt and pepper and mash some more. Chili peppers vary individually in their hotness. Start with a half of one chili pepper and add to the guacamole to your desired degree of hotness. Be careful handling the peppers; wash your hands thoroughly after handling and do not touch your eyes or the area near your eyes with your hands for several hours. Keep the tomatoes separate until ready to serve. 3) Add one avocado pit and cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to prevent oxidation from the air reaching it. Refrigerate until ready. 4) Just before serving, add the chopped tomato to the guacamole and mix.
