FILMMAKER DANIEL TONITTO TRAVELS EUROPE ASKING FOR... JOKES

PlaceHolder_11_554PXTONITTOFilmmaker Daniel Tonitto is quite familiar with bridging divides. This graduate in film from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York recently shot a film called JOY SQUARE, where he traveled to 24 countries in Europe with his 16 mm camera surprising strangers on the streets with only one question: "Could you tell me a joke?"  Although in most countries he had to have an interpreter, Daniel says with enthusiasm and passion that the communication between he and the person happened through their mutual smiles. "People became more friendly because of the joke. In human aspects, it was beautiful because this non-verbal communication eliminated all cultural barriers. A smile is universal, we understand that."

Tonitto has lived in England and the US but primarily grew up between Venezuela and Italy where his family is from. He says that it's very hard to see himself as completely Venezuelan or Italian. He prefers defining himself as an "eternal tourist". For him nationality is a reductive concept because every place where we've lived makes us who we are. "Identity goes beyond borders and passports...", he says.

The idea for JOY SQUARE came from a desire to know Europe not on a tour but through its people's humor. As he was told in France: "Humor is something very serious. Through humor you can find big truths and unveil the people and the moment lived by a country." The filmmaker didn't have many resources and decided to shoot 10 minutes in each city with people speaking in their own "beautiful languages". "This experience was very enriching for me to see Europe closer and be able to show something more than London and Paris, which is usually what Hollywood films tend to show."

WITH "PAINTIMATIONS" MICHAEL BURTON FUSES PAINT & FILM

MIKE_BURTON3PlaceHolder_14_668PXA card at the end of Michael Burton's first "Paintimation," Frequency, reads, "This animation was created entirely on one canvas using latex paint, a digital camera and a home computer."  Although his subsequent work uses multiple canvases, it still explores the evolving process of painting by recording changing layers of image as Burton paints over them.

"I love traditional painting," says Burton who's a classically trained painter, "But I'm also interested in what the recording of it reveals about the process - how working and reworking something, the original painting gets wiped away and annihilated."

After receiving his MFA in 2007 from The University of Nebraska Lincoln, where he also teaches Visual Literacy and Design, Burton started shooting time-lapsed videos as he worked on large-scale paintings. He quickly started to create what he coined "paintimations" which have screened at venues as diverse as the Athens Film Festival in Greece and the Building Bridges Film and Arts Festival in New Bedford Massachusetts, both in 2009.

Searching for unique venues to show his work, Burton will participate next at Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach in Florida, a projection art festival that explores how design, technology and architecture intertwine to create entirely new art forms. Thirty-six video projects, including Burton's The Ancient Mariner will screen on the iconic white walls of the community's buildings and rooftops. Taking his work outside the gallery, Burton feels it creates new discussions. "Opening it up I hope to get people involved in the creative process and not just share my ideas but also learn from others as well."

Burton's latest series, "The Quote Project," is an open call for sharing and discussion based on common quotes that can be translated into 15 second or less videos, composites or animations. Wrong Tree takes its lead from "barking up the wrong tree" and is his first contribution to the dialogue.

Do you have a quote in mind or have you animated one yourself? You can send in suggestions, discuss and share links to your own animations by visiting Burton's website: www.burtonworldart.com  Open the Tweetboard located on the left side of the homepage to share your thoughts and work.

     COMING SOON!  "PAINTING WITH GUITAR"
Adrian_Belew_2PlaceHolder_11_223PXInterview with Adrian Belew. This experimental guitarist, member of the prog rock group King Crimson and former guitarist for Frank Zappa, David Bowie & The Talking Heads will present new forms of sound creation alongside his paintings for two June performances in New England. And we're pleased to announce that next month we'll feature an interview with exclusive content for BridgeThink focusing on new techniques he's using at these two shows. Techniques include his work with the recently developed Tenori-On - an electronic and visual instrument first presented at SIGGRAPH 2005. As an active artist, we'll also ask him about his paintings which will be onstage as part of both events.      Neighborhood Earth By Leila Kaas

NEIGHBORHOOD_EARTH_GLOVES4
With the change from Winter to Spring in the Nordic region, I'm looking at what I gleaned during the cold season. As a scavenger, I collected pictures of unseen details and lost objects on the streets.

Finding meaning in the details...

Walking on the streets they talk to me, the lost winter objects. Gloves that are not a pair anymore and hats that miss their owners' ideas and memories. They look at me lonely as the forgotten feel. But they are also poetic.

Why can't I ignore these legions of forgotten gloves and hats and keep moving, indifferent as everybody else? Maybe it's because I don't pay attention to everybody. I'm laughing at myself now. I can't concentrate on everybody. It's too much. But the detail whispers and seduces me. Have you ever noticed how many hearts surround us? They can be printed on an old piece of gum on the sidewalk, or simply form in a drop of water on a leaf. They can even smile at us from a big puddle that froze in the cold winter.

Traveling to new places heightens our senses and can make us aware of the details that surround us.  Connecting with these details is often what creative people do.  What details in your creative life need more connection?   Where are the "lost gloves" taken now that winter has passed us by? Are they going to meet each other? That would be beautiful...

The everybody world calls us saying this is not what we should pay attention to.  Yet, the details exist.  The gloves and the hearts remain, waiting to be discovered by an artist, a filmmaker, a poet...

What details call YOUR attention...
